my first meeting with dr. b., i was still in high school, and went to their house to see richard. (for some mischief to be sure). i didn't know dr. b. at the time, so i saw this gent mowing the lawn, assuming it was richard's dad. as i passed him, i nodded, them mentioned to him he missed a spot.... the look i got was priceless!

When I reminisce over my undergraduate years as an Economics major at Brown (1949-1953), the one name that invariably pops us first is that of George Borts. A magnificent lecturer, he made Economics interesting, easy to understand and appreciate, and leaving us wanting to know more. He was a clear stand-out in a group of brilliant professors (Bosland, Taft, Killough, Minsky, Smith). On top of that, he had a wicked sense of humor. When some students protested over his scheduling an hour exam on Good Friday during Easter week, he replied "this will give you an opportunity to resurrect your low grades". The complaints ended and everyone showed up for the test. May he rest in peace.

Professor Borts set the standard for all instructors at Brown. He exemplified scholarship, dedication, and character. Not only a remarkable academic, Prof. Borts was a true gentleman who was patently invested in his students' intellectual development. More importantly, he was clearly adored by all who had the privilege of knowing him. I was fortunate enough to have taken two classes with Prof. Borts, and my experience at Brown can largely be defined by him. He is the one professor whose course lessons one will retain for many years after finishing his classes and whose ability to cultivate one's critical thinking is applicable across many disciplines. Moreover, Prof. Borts will be remembered for his trademark wit with which he seamlessly accessorized both complex lectures and casual conversations alike.
May his memory be for a blessing. My heartfelt condolences go to the entire Borts Family--Prof. Borts was an incredible, distinguished man who will surely be missed.

George was a wonderful man and made great contributions to Brown and the economics profession. He was a mentor and friend to me, from the time I joined the Brown economics faculty in 1965. George, we will all miss you and wish you well. My deep condolences to the family.

George had a wonderful sense of humor. Last October, he wrote some letters of recommendation for me. After he sent them out, here is what he replied to me, "Hello Rose, The letters have gone out to the Dominicans and to the Sisters of Joseph. At least you will know where to pray if you are worried about admission. I think you will do very well”.
George, you will be truly missed. Rest in peace my good friend. My sincere condolences to the Borts family.

Professor Borts was the first and most important of my mentors. He is the main reason why my life has been so fulfilling and why my family and I have been so touched by his own life. I am not alone in how I feel about George, of course. But a man becomes much more than your PhD thesis advisor when he buys you a winter coat because he knows how poor you are, or when he accepts your article for review in the journal he manages, or when he personally calls you to applaud your decision to join the Fed staff rather than toil in academia. These small actions are the mark of a person who is truly gifted at understanding not just economics but economists, and not just economists but people with real challenges. George, we will never ever forget you. My own sons know your name and why they know it.

I studied under George as both an undergraduate and PhD student. His command of economics and his uncompromising insistence on taking it seriously made him an inspiration and was part of the reason I became a professional economist. His values and standards of professional behavior live on in me and countless others who studied under him.

I was sorry to hear about the demise of my teacher and thesis advisor. I hope his family still has the little sculpture of him as a child, I fixed the nose on it in 1966 or 1967, it was a nice portrait.

To the family of George Borts,
My Sincere Sympathy to you all. Mom is at the place where I work and I knew your dad from when he would visit. George was a wonderful man and had a great sense of humor. I told him that I couldn't forget his name because it was the same as my dad's, which was a wonderful thing, this brought a smile to him. His devotion to your mom was very admirable and an inspiration to many of us who knew him. It was an honor to know him and we will all miss seeing him. My thoughts and Prayers are with you at this time. It is difficult to lose someone we love but keeping memories close to your heart does bring peace and comfort.
