Raymond Fogarty Obituary

FOGARTY, RAYMOND W.
61, of Melody Hill Lane, Harmony, died Thursday, September 27, 2018 at The Carolinas Medical Center in North Carolina. He was the loving husband of Phoebe (Dahlquist) Fogarty. They had been married for 33 wonderful years.
Born in Providence, he was especially proud to be the son of the late Raymond H. and Mary (Hogan) Fogarty. As a lifelong resident of Harmony, there was no place he loved to be more, often saying, "As nice as it is to travel, there is nothing better than coming home."
Ray was the Executive Director of the Chafee Center for International Business, RI Export Assistance Center, and World Trade Center RI at Bryant University. The Center was instrumental in providing businesses with the resources to embark in international commerce. Under his leadership, the Center was transformed from a local service into a model private/public organization with international strategic partnerships and clients. In 2000, the Center received the top export development recognition in the country – the President's E-Award. He was instrumental in the creation of NASBITE (National Association of Small Business International Trade Educators), the Certified Global Business Professional (CGBP) credentials and the founder of Bryant's World Trade Day. Dedicated to international trade for more than 30 years, Ray was honored as the 2016 recipient of the NASBITE International John Otis Lifetime Achievement Award.
Ray served with distinction for 10 years as a RI State Representative before stepping down to focus his attention on his local community and young family. He was co-chair of the Harmony Hill School Capital Campaign as well as co-chair of the Foster-Glocester Building Committee. He served as Moderator for the Town of Glocester and Harmony Fire Department for many years. He was the chair of the Small Business Loan Fund as well as co-chair for the Rhode Island Industrial Facilities Program for the State of Rhode Island. He served as a Chief Steward for the Sons of Irish Kings and always enjoyed the company of cousins. He was very proud to honor the legacy of his late uncle, Congressman John E. Fogarty by serving on the board of his foundation for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Though he was involved in many things, he most treasured his time spent with family and friends. Ray spent many years coaching and cheering on his children, many relatives and friends in local sports.
Besides his wife he is survived by his children: Raymond E. Fogarty and his wife, Kailyn of Harmony, Margaret E. Fogarty and her fiancé, Michael Coyle of Noank, CT, Michael J. Fogarty and Joseph E. Fogarty, both of Harmony, his granddaughter, Margaret Q. Fogarty and his siblings: Elaine Pavao and her husband, Paul of Smithfield, Patricia Pettit and her husband Kevin of North Providence, Margaret Chella and her husband, Michael of Harmony and sister in law, Gail Higgins Fogarty. He was the brother of the late Edward M. Fogarty and they are now together again enjoying the winningest season in Boston Red Sox history. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial to which relatives and friends are invited will be Wednesday at 9:30am in St. Philip Church, 622 Putnam Avenue, Greenville. Burial will follow in Acote's Hill Cemetery, Chepachet. Visitation will be Tuesday 4-8pm in Anderson-Winfield Funeral Home, Rt 44 at Greenville Common, Greenville. Please omit flowers. To the Fogarty Family It is with great sadness that I read of Ray's passing. He and I attended Bryant together. Throughout that time, we were study partners and became friends; a friendship that lasted a lifetime. I retired in July and moved to Florida. I was unaware totally of his death. I would like to say something helpful but, at this time I am too overwhelmed to say anything other than I am very sad. May God bless you all. Deborah Pannullo Smithfield

My deepest sympathy to the Fogarty Family. I was shocked at the passing of Ray at such an early age. He was a great individual who loved family, community and state. He was an individual who had great empathy for all. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Sorry to hear of Raymond's passing. I found out after his memorial mass at St. Philip's Church, my parish. I found out , also, that he was involved before as representative when my cousin, Mayor, Buddy Cianci, God rest his soul, was in office. Raymond is at peace now, and I will keep him in my prayers.

GOD BLESS!

Dear Phoebe and family...Ray's many friends at Bryant are indeed saddened about his leaving us so soon. His good humor and quick wit brightened many a lunch hour, and his passion for his work was inspiring to us all. I worked with Ray on many environmental policy issues and he was always so helpful in masterminding just the right touch for seminars and workshops, and then equally supportive as the events unfolded. Ray's professional commitment and his gentle ways were appreciated by all who knew him. He has left an indelible imprint on the Rhode Island business community and I'm sure his lasting influence will continue to make this a better place. My sympathies to your entire family. You won't be surprised at all to know that he talked about all of you often and reminded us of how important family commitment is in our everyday lives.

Our deepest sympathies for your loss. Ray was a mentor for me and my husband, Andrew, when we worked at the RIEAC. He helped to launch both of our careers, showed us how to lead with drive and compassion and, more importantly, convinced Andrew to ask me out on a date which lead to our marriage five years later. We both owe so much to Ray and we wish we could have been in RI for the services.

Is there someone more generous and full of grace than Ray? I think not. He has been a tireless champion of small, medium, growing, struggling, successful and working to be successful. He was always interested in how employers were doing finding the skilled team members needed to build their businesses. He was a consummate professional and a great partner to work with. But most important was what a solid man he was; honest, ethical, caring and unselfish. I am going to miss him greatly as will so many fellow Rhode Islanders. God Bless a really good man, our friend and colleague, Amen.

Ray will be remembered as one of the most selfless, devoted and kind persons ever. I fondly remember sharing ideas with him about how to integrate green into Ross McCurdy's classroom at Ponaganset High School. Ray was a supreme do-gooder who never said no. He reminds me of my own father who, like Ray, was very involved with the community he loved and whom we lost too soon. I will miss Ray. May he rest in peace.

My condolences to the family on the sudden loss of Ray. He had done much good with his life and the gifts he had. Wow! I played senior little league baseball with him and only saw him a couple of times since then. It was always good to see him. I'm certain this is a tremendous loss for all who knew him.

The Foster-Glocester community has lost a friend, and so has the State of Rhode Island.

Rest In Peace to an incredible man and boss Ray Fogarty. I would like to express my condolences to the family, I am terribly sorry for your loss. Ray provided me with a job at the Chafee Center where I worked during my four years at Bryant. This position helped me provide for my education, while enriching my learning and experience in international business. Due to Ray's generosity and hard work, I was given the opportunity to consult with many Rhode Island area companies and assist with their international expansion. I continue to utilize those lessons learned in my current role today as a Global Trade professional. Ray's work has, and continues to help countless organizations successfully navigate global markets. Thank you Ray, you have left an incredible legacy, and you will be missed by many.- Maura Bourke Bryant class of 2016

Phoebe and the fogarty family. Although it's been a couple years since I saw him last, i always enjoyed our conversations that we had. Ray was a first class gentleman. Kind, compassionate individual that I was always fond of. I believe Ray always touched peoples life in a positive way. It's sad that life becomes so busy that we lose touch at times with certain friends. Ray will be missed but I will hold all the great conversations we had in good memory. On behalf of the Colasante family, we hope you and your family stay strong through this trying time. God bless your wonderful family

Ray was more than a neighbor, friend, he was so personable, a real gentleman, and even though he had many titles, his favorite by far was husband and father. You knew his family was his top priority and we never tired of his many family stories. May your wonderful memories comfort you and yours at this most difficult time. We are so sad and sorry to hear about Ray's passing. What a loss for the entire family. Always so kind and pleasant. I remember him telling me a few years after his mother's passing, that he knew for certain that she was doing more work for the family than when she was here on earth. Now, its Ray's turn...he will be working little miracles from heaven. May your faith and his love for his family comfort all who are mourning during the days ahead.

Ray's uncle Charlie (Sr) hired me at SBA. We worked together as Ray was the 'go to guy' in helping the small business community with their export needs and questions. Ray was quiet but always so pleasant accommodating and would go out of his way to help all visitors. A life ended much to soon for such a wonderful person. He will be missed.
