J. Putnam Obituary

PUTNAM, REV. DR. J. EDWARD, 75, died suddenly on September 28, 2016. He was married to Doreen (Coulson) Putnam, his beloved wife, for 51 years. Born in Hudson Falls, NY, he was the son of the late Leon D. Putnam and Eleanor (Betts) Putnam. Fr. Ed was ordained an Episcopal Priest in 1970 and served in a dozen parishes over 37 years before his retirement from the ministry. An avid writer during his retirement, Ed enjoyed reading, wordsmithing, the Red Sox, discussing politics, traveling, spending time with family, and his daily trips to Starbucks to read the NY Times from cover to cover. He received his B.A. from SUNY Oneonta, M.Ed. from UMass-Amherst, M.Div. from Berkeley School of Divinity, Yale University, and D.Min. from Phillips University. He was appreciated for his sensitivity in building relationships between friends and colleagues. Many are thankful for his mentorship in their spiritual growth. In addition to his wife he is survived by his loving children Robert Putnam (Hedy), Bethany Putnam, and Allie Quick (Tom), as well as his adoring grandchildren Rachyl, Megan (Eduardo), Kiarra, and Tayzia, and one great grandchild, Tiger. He was the brother of David Putnam, Albert Putnam, and Janice Stephenson. The family invites you to join them for the penultimate chapter and celebration of Ed's life. Visitation will be held Friday, September 30, 2016 at Grace Episcopal Church, 175 Mathewson St., Providence, from 4 to 7 PM. Holy Eucharist will be celebrated Saturday at 11 AM at Grace Church. In lieu of flowers donation can be made to WaterFire Providence, 101 Regent Ave. #12, Providence, RI 02909, or the University of Pittsburgh Writing Center, 128 North Craig St., Pittsburgh, PA 15260. Doreen and family, Ed was one of the most kind, honest and witty person I've ever known. Both Ralph and I were taken aback by the news of his unfortunate accident. We pray for him, although I don't think he needs it! He is already where he deserved to be! With love and good memories of Ed.

Dear Doreen and Putnam Family,

I am so glad I had the pleasure of knowing Ed! He was truly a wonderful, kind and caring man (even my husky who usually shies away from men took to Ed). I will miss his warm smile and friendly waves. His passing is a tremendous loss and will be greatly felt in our neighborhood. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Love,
Kelly McCormack

I cannot express enough what sad news this is. Ed was a unique man, so kind and loving and always so interesting to be with. I send you all the love and strength to hold on to your special memories with him and know how much he loved you and loved life. May God rest his soul and bring him peace. I can only wish courage and love for you over the next few days and those to come. Doreen, know that I am here for you whenever you need a friend.

Doreen and Bethany!! I was extremely shocked to read about Ed's death. Only knew him for a short time, but loved being in his presence. Especially at the chili cook .. sitting right next to each other, competing for THE title.
Hugs to both of you......

So so, sorry!
