LOPEZ-MORILLAS, FRANCES (MAPES)
100, died November 6th at the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center, Providence. She was the wife of the late Professor Juan López-Morillas of the Departments of Spanish and Comparative Literature at Brown University. Born in Fulton, MO, and raised in Iowa City, IA, she lived in Providence from 1943 to 1978 and 1997 to 2018. She taught Spanish for many years at the Wheeler School and later became a distinguished translator of fiction and non-fiction from Spanish to English: her 23 translated books earned her a listing in Who's Who in America in 2006.
She is survived by her children, Martin Morell of New York City, Consuelo López-Morillas of Bloomington, IN, and Julian López-Morillas of Crockett, CA, three grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and one nephew. She was preceded in death by her sister, Amy Virginia Mapes Roseberg, and her parents, Erwin K. Mapes and Laura Hinkhouse Mapes, all of Iowa City.
