Harold G. Martin(1922 - 2014)

Harold G. Martin Mr. Harold G. Martin, 92, of Waynesboro, died Monday evening, June 16, 2014 in Menno Haven Retirement Community, Chambersburg. Mr. Martin had lived in Waynesboro since 1935. Born March 16, 1922 in Mount Pleasant, PA, he was the son of the late Pastor Abram E. and Eula Mae (Horst) Martin. His father served Mount Pleasant United Brethren Church in Mount Pleasant. Mr. Martin graduated from Waynesboro High School with the class of 1939. He later earned a degree in civil engineering from The Pennsylvania State University in 1944. A World War II veteran, he served with the Army Corp of Engineers from 1944-1946, attaining the rank of Second Sargent. He was stationed in the Philippine Islands as the Administrative NCO of a hand-picked engineering organization called GENED. GENED was assembled at General McArthur's request to rebuild the city of Manila after fighting ended. Mr. Martin helped direct the repair and restoration of the city infrastructure, including streets, bridges and utilities and compiled an extensive photo library of the project. He and his wife, the late Gladys Christine (Shipley) Martin, were married on June 5, 1948 in Waynesboro. Mrs. Martin died on May 19, 2007. After a brief stint at Grove Manufacturing in Shady Grove, PA, he worked at Fairchild Aircraft in Hagerstown, MD from 1946-1982. His career took him to the Far East, South America and Europe. After retiring from Fairchild, he and his partner, Ed Straub of Gettysburg, PA, formed a consulting firm and worked as designated engineering representatives contracting with the FAA from 1982-2010. Mr. Martin was a regular and articulate contributor to The Record Herald's Letters to the Editor. He appreciated all things automotive, including attending races at Hagerstown Raceway and Summit Point with his son and restoring his wife's 1966 Mustang convertible. He looked forward to family vacations at Ocean City, MD and boating trips on the Potomac River. Mr. Martin and his wife enjoyed annual cruises to the Caribbean and took their family with them for a 10-day cruise in 2002. He is survived by a daughter, Judith A. Krieger and her husband, Dr. Steve Kriger of York, PA; a son, Bruce G. Martin and his wife, Penny (Brown) Martin of Media, PA; five grandchildren, Tracy Kreitz, Jessica McCleary, Ethan Krieger, Andrew Krieger and Adam Krieger; and three great-grandchildren, Eliza McCleary, Cole McCleary, and Brooke Christine Krieger. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Olan Martin. Graveside services will be held at 12:00 P.M. Friday, June 20, 2014 in Green Hill Cemetery, 953 S. Potomac St., Waynesboro, with Pastor Lin Smalec officiating. There will be no public viewing. Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro, is handling the arrangements.
