J. Fred Rice J. Fred (Jacob Frederick) Rice, 89, of Duffield, passed away on August 11, 2013 in the Penn Hall Nursing Center, Chambersburg, PA. He was born on April 25, 1924, the sixth and middle child of Willis M. & Ivy Hartman Rice. He grew up in Zullinger, PA, and graduated from the Washington Township High School in 1941. After graduation, he worked on Norlo Farm until his marriage on March 23, 1946 to Dorothy I. Wingert of St. Thomas. Together they worked on several dairy farms until purchasing what became the home base of Ricecrest Farms in 1962. He also drove a school bus for a number of years for the Chambersburg Area School District while farming. Fred was a fourth generation member of the former Prices Church of the Brethren, Waynesboro, PA, serving as treasurer, deacon, and in other capacities. He grew sweet corn for the Hagerstown Rescue Mission, drove a bus for Camp Joy-El and volunteered for the Children's Aid Society, MCC meat canning project and various disaster relief efforts. In his retirement years, he volunteered at Menno Haven, the New Windsor Relief Center, and was a Gideon. Fred enjoyed playing his guitar, planting flowers, growing a vegetable garden, traveling on bus tours, attending gospel concerts, hosting family gatherings and playing games with his grandchildren. After designing and moving to a retirement home in 1988, he began to make woodcrafts and raised chickens and pigeons. In addition to his wife, Fred is survived by three children: Fred (Doreen) Rice, Joanne (Glenn) Wingert, and Dale (Cheryl) Rice; 9 grandchildren: Allen (Lori) Rice, Darren (Grace) Rice, David (Eloisa) Rice, Rebekah (Eric) Fisak, Brandt Wingert, Luke Wingert, Allison Rice, Brianne Rice, Brent Rice; 5 great-grandchildren: Emily, Zachary, Jacob, Clayton and Adison Rice. Surviving siblings are Dorothy Angle and Paul Rice. He was preceded in death by the following siblings: Catherine Rice, Anna Myers, Lois Sollenberger, Hartman Rice, Thelma Plum, Burnell Rice, Gladys Esh and Edna Rice. The family will receive friends on Friday, Aug. 16, 2013 at Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home, 725 Norland Ave., Chambersburg, PA from 6 to 8 PM. Burial will be at 10:00 AM on Saturday, August 17, 2013 in the Antietam Cemetery, 10610 Wayne Highway, Waynesboro, PA. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 AM at Trinity Fellowship with Ministers Earl Eby and Garnet Myers officiating.
