Jack W. Alexander, 88, of Mercersburg, passed away on Friday, May 3, 2013 at the Chambersburg Hospital. Born in Pittsburgh, on November 9, 1924, he was the son of Joseph B., Sr. and Charlotte Weir Alexander. He graduated from Uniontown High School in 1942. Having a passion for flying and service to country, Jack enlisted in the Army
Air Corps in May of 1943. With his enlistment, his parents had all four of their sons serving in the US Military at the same time. He was a member of Cadet Class 1944-I at Eagle Pass, TX and was assigned the rank of Flight Officer. Leaving active duty in November 1945, he continued his service in the Air Force Reserves and was honorably discharged with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in July, 1955. On February 23, 1951 Jack married Charmaine Crago of New Salem. After nearly 62 years of marriage, Mrs. Alexander passed away on November 7, 2012. Jack continued his flying career when the family moved to Mercersburg in 1960, where he was the pilot for Fry Coal and Stone, Co. He subsequently held positions as a corporate pilot for Martin Marietta Corporation, Grove Manufacturing, Fairchild Industries and H B Mellott Estates. Jack flew such luminaries as Werner Von Braun, Henry Kissinger, Gerald Ford and Elvis Presley. He retired from active flying in 1989 but maintained his passion for airplanes throughout his life. Jack was a long time member of the Presbyterian Church of the Upper West Conococheague, Mercersburg. He was also a member of Quiet Birdmen- Hagerstown Hanger; was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of Mount Pisgah Lodge No. 443, F&AM, Greencastle; Veterans of Foreign Wars
and the American Legion, both of Mercersburg. Jack always had a joke or "true" story to share with his many friends. Jack is survived by his children, Mark W. (Linda) Alexander of Salisbury, NC; Gary W. Alexander of Chambersburg and Kimberly A. (Allen) Dixon of Hickory, N.C.; his grandchildren, Michael C. Alexander of Salisbury; Madalyn R. Alexander, Seattle, Wash.; Sean M. Bolick, Hickory; Lauren F. Alexander, Chapel Hill, N.C., and Julie Odom-Dixon, Guyton, Ga. He is also survived by a brother Waitman E. (Pearl) Alexander Sr., Melbourne, Fla.; and sisters, Marian Stroud, St. Petersburg, Fla., and Shirley Sharpe, Phoenix, Ariz. In addition to his wife and parents, Jack was predeceased by brothers Joseph B. Alexander, Jr., and Richard S. Alexander. Funeral services will be held Wednesday May 8, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the Mercersburg Presbyterian Church, 34 W. Seminary St. Visitation will be held at the Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, 47 N. Park Ave., Mercersburg, on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.
