Jacob M. Bartl

Mr. Jacob M. "Jake" Bartl, 93, passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 19, 2013 at Manor Care, Chambersburg, PA. Born April 26, 1919 in Lillian, Alabama, he was the son of the late Antony and Anna (Koehler) Bartl. Jake served in the United States Navy during World War II, retiring as a Chief Petty Officer. He met his wife, Margaret "Peg" (McNevin) Bartl at a USO dance at the Willow Grove Navel Base. They were married on April 7, 1945 in Long Island, NY. Several of his businesses resolved around the field of aviation in New York. Jake and Peggy moved to Fayetteville thirty six years ago, buying a small farm to breed Charlois cattle. Jacob is survived by two daughters, Pamela Bartl of Chambersburg and Deborah Bartl of Fayetteville, PA. He has six grandchildren: David Batts, Jason Batts, Christopher Wassil, Michael Wassil, John Wassil and Natasha Melius and six great-grandchildren with one on the way. He is also survived by his son-in-law, Richard Wassil, of Fayetteville, his brother, Tony Bartl, of Lillian, Alabama and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, Jacob was preceded in death by his sisters, Ann and Elizabeth, a daughter, Dolores Wassil and two grandsons, John and Aaron Batts. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church, 320 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg, PA. Burial will follow in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in Miller-Bowersox Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington Street, Greencastle, PA.
