Joseph D. Browell

Sr. Joseph D. Browell Sr., passed away into the arms of his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, January 30, 2013. He was a resident at Zerbe Sisters Nursing Center, Narvon, since April 20, 2012 and under the car of Compassionate Care Hospice of York, since Thursday, January 24, 2013. His death was the result of a long battle with the wretched disease of Alzheimer's complicated by severe back pain and an upper respiratory infection. He was born in Hopewell, on November 8, 1934, the son of the late J. Curtis Browell and Josephine Bridenstine Browell. He was a graduate of Robert P. Smith High School, Hopewell. He served in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958 during the Hungarian Uprising stationed in Germany. In 1958, he moved to Coatesville, where he worked as an artificial inseminator of cattle for Atlantic Breeders Co-op. In 1965, he started a career working as a Fertilizer/Chemical Salesman. In 1971, he became a manager with Agrico Chemical Company of Keymar, MD and the family moved to Greencastle. In 1981 he became manager of Honey Brook Farm Center owned by Ben O. Stoltzfus in Honey Brook. Honey Brook Farm Center became a subsidiary of Moyer & Sons of Souderton. He retired in 1986. He enjoyed spending time with his family, attending church activities, playing golf, working in his wood shop and on his cars, traveling and camping. Joseph was the beloved husband of Rose Gibble Browell of Narvon. They enjoyed 52 years and 6 months of marriage. He is survived by three children, Joseph D. Browell Jr., husband of Barbara L. Brouse of Ephrata, Deborah L. Slye, wife of Richard Allen Slye, Narvon, and Sherri D. Troop, wife of David G. Troop, New Holland. He leaves behind seven beloved grandchildren, Joshua and Chelsey Browell, Lauren and Nathan Slye, Carley and Ryan Troop and Colton Troop, husband of Kylie Garton of Akron. He was preceded in death by a brother Curtis A. Browell, husband of Maureen Shaw of Bedford; a sister, Helen Jay, wife of Allen Jay, Artemas. Other sibling survivors are, Jean Collier, wife of Clyde Collier (deceased) of Shippensburg, Ralph Browell, husband of Gloria Bowser (deceased) of Hopewell, Daniel K. Browell, husband of Cathy Ritchey of St. Thomas, David L. Browell, husband of Jeannie Moses of Hopewell, and Dennis H. Browell, husband of Denise Blake of Hopewell. Joe was an active church member until his illness interfered with his attending church. A visitation will take place on Saturday, March 2, 2013, from 10 to 11 a.m., at the Hopewell Christian Fellowship Church, 2286 Elverson Rd., Elverson, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. with Pastor Mark Kraybill officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Employee Sunshine Fund at Zerbe Sisters Nursing Center, 2499 Zerbe Road, Narvon, PA 17555. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staff of Zerbe Sisters Nursing Center and Compassionate Care Hospice of York. Joe's brain was donated to Alzheimer's research.
