Philip B. McAfee Mr. Philip B. "Bard" McAfee, 85, of Mercersburg, died Thursday, August 8, 2013, at the Chambersburg Hospital. Born June 16, 1928, in Mercersburg, he was a son of the late Philip B., Sr. and Edith Truax McAfee. As a teenager Bard worked at a local gas station. He learned to play the coronet when he was eleven years old and played with the American Legion Community Band from 1939 until the late 1950's and he also played with other bands for special programs. While working at the Mercersburg Tannery he also sold cars for Sixeas Auto Sales. He was an auto salesman for 32 years in Mercersburg working for Frank Gayman, Clyde Fox, and Bob Hoffman. Bard retired in 1991. He was a member of American Legion #517 and VFW
#6241 both of Mercersburg. He served with The United States Merchant Marine during World War II
. Bard served in the Atlantic War Zone and Mediterranean Middle East War Zone and was awarded a Combat Bar. Surviving family include his wife, Cleone E. Hoover McAfee, whom he married July 15, 1950; and daughters, Diane E. and husband Timothy W. Hann of McConnellsburg and Denise L. McAfee of Harrisburg. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers, Gerald McAfee and Isadore McAfee; and his sisters, Maxine Richesson and Wilda Miller. There will be no viewing. However, the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday August 16, 2013, at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home Inc., Mercersburg. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 17, 2013, at Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg with Pastor William C. Swope officiating.
