Richard B. Smith

Mr. Richard B. "Zeke" Smith, 89, of 11935 Green Ridge Drive, Waynesboro, passed away Tuesday, January 15, 2013 in the Village of Laurel Run, Fayetteville, following a short illness. Born May 10, 1923 in Quincy, he was the son of the late Frank M. and Lillie (Friese) Smith. Mr. Smith attended Quincy Elementary School and was a graduate of Waynesboro Area Senior High School with the Class of 1941. He served in the United States Navy during World War II in the European Theater from March 1943 until February 1946. His first wife, Mrs. Lottie Isabelle (Spangler) Smith passed away in January 1980. He and his second wife of 32 years, Mrs. Martha (McCleaf) Smith, were married January 10, 1981 in Waynesboro. They had lived at their present residence for the past 16 years. In his early life, Mr. Smith was employed at Landis Tool Company, Waynesboro. He later worked at Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg, for 27 years. During his career he travelled to Army installations in various states as an instructor in armaments and in 1955 he spent three months in Manila, Philippines as a member of the Armaments Advisor Pentagon Team. He retired in 1974 as a supervisor in the Armament Division. Following his retirement he was employed part time at both Miller's Auto Supply, Wayne Heights and for Burns Security as a guard at Landis Machine Company, Waynesboro. Mr. Smith was a member of The Church of the Apostles, United Church of Christ, Waynesboro, where he served as a deacon on the Consistory and enjoyed singing in the choir. He also was a member of Joe Stickell American Legion Post #15, Waynesboro, National Association of Retired Federal Employees Chapter #1063, Chambersburg and National AARP. He enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing and in early years, hiking the Appalachian Trail. In later years, he especially enjoyed archery hunting out west with his son, Richard, Jr. Mr. Smith was also an avid fan of the Baltimore Orioles, bowler and golfer, having enjoyed playing golf with the Glade Valley Maryland MISGA Golf Association in Walkersville, MD for many years. In addition to his second wife, he is survived by a son, Richard B. Smith, Jr. and his wife, Raquel of Salt Lake City, UT; a daughter, Cynthia I. Barnette and her husband, Randy of Lakeland, FL; four step-children, Robert S. Benchoff and his wife Shelley, Mary Louise Misner and her husband, Tim, Linda L. Ritchie and her husband, Danny, and Laurie E. Hovermale and her husband, Bert, all of Waynesboro; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and first wife, he was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara R. Beard. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 19, 2013 in The Church of the Apostles, United Church of Christ, 336 Barnett Avenue, Waynesboro with the Pastor Michael Cromer officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Saturday in the church. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family in Quincy Cemetery where military graveside honors will be conducted by the Honor Guard of Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post #1599, Chambersburg, In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Church of the Apostles, United Church of Christ, 336 Barnett Ave., Waynesboro 17268.
