Virgil M. Spencer

Virgil M. Spencer, age 84, of Mercersburg, passed away Wednesday, December 19, 2012, at Chambersburg Hospital. Born August 23, 1928, in Paw Paw, WV, he was the son of Charles and Iva (Hamilton) Spencer. He married Pauline (Frisby) Spencer on February 14, 1953. After serving in the Korean War as a military policeman, he was employed at Lowengart Tannery in Mercersburg and later worked for and retired from Mack Trucks, Hagerstown, Md. after 26 years of service. He is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, Pauline Spencer; one son, Nolan Spencer (wife Cynthia) of Chambersburg, one daughter, Julia Jenkins (husband Oscar), also of Chambersburg, one grandson Bradley Hess of Blue Ridge Summit and one granddaughter, Meghan Waters of Hagerstown, Md. Virgil is also survived by one brother, Ralph Spencer of Cumberland, Md., nieces and nephews. He was preceeded in death by his parents and one son, David Eugene Spencer. Virgil was a member of the American Legion Post 830, Mercersburg, PA and American Legion, Greencastle. Prior to his illness, he enjoyed golfing and playing with his beloved dog Carmen. He will be dearly missed by his family and the staff at Manor Care Nursing Home. A private memorial service will be held at the discretion of the family. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Auer Cremation Society of Pennsylvania. The family requests those who wish to make a donation in his name may do so to the Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter, Chambersburg, or the Disabled Veterans' Association.
