William C. Rice Jr.(1942 - 2014)

William C. Rice, Jr. William "Bill" Calvin Rice, Jr., 72, of Blue Ridge Summit, passed away peacefully on April 7, 2014, at the Hershey Medical Center. He was born on January 22, 1942, in Frederick, Md., and was the son of the late William Calvin and Mary Elizabeth (Eaton) Rice. Bill graduated from Frederick High School in 1960, after which he served in the U.S. Army for three years. He then received an associate's degree from Frederick Community College before entering Towson State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree and master's degree, both in history. Bill was employed for many years by the U.S. Department of the Army at Fort Detrick in Frederick, Md., spending most of his career in the Civilian Personnel Office. During this time, he also earned a Ph.D. in European Diplomatic Relations from Johns Hopkins University. Prior to and after retirement, Bill taught courses in history and political science at Shepherd University in West Virginia, as well as Wilson College in Chambersburg. Bill was a faithful member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. His life passions included gardening, woodworking, reading, and spending time with family, especially his grandchildren. He was a wonderful communicator with a gentle heart and inspiring intellect, and he never missed an opportunity to invest in the lives of those who knew and loved him. Bill is survived by his wife of 48 years, Judith Ann (Sell) Rice; son, William "Chip" Rice and wife Shari of Enola, daughter, Mary Ann (Rice) Raun and husband Ian of Sharpsburg, Md.; sisters, Grace Keeney, Margaret Wachter, and Edna Snyder, all of Frederick, Md.; and his three beloved grandchildren, Trevor, Will, and Andrew. At Bill's request, no funeral or memorial service is planned. Burial will be attended to privately by the family.
