John C. Barges Sr., 90, of St. Thomas, passed away November 26, 2012, at Chambersburg Hospital. He was born February 2, 1922, in Mercersburg, to Christ and Sarah (Bryan) Barges. He was married to Helen Brake Barges on Oct. 10, 1947. John was retired from Letterkenny Army Depot where he had been a truck driver. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 1599 in Chambersburg and the American Legion Post 612 in St. Thomas. He was also a member of DAV Post 78, American Legion Post 517 and Post 606, the 40 & 8 Club Post 509, St. Thomas Volunteer Fire Company and the St. Thomas Fire Police. He enjoyed NASCAR racing. He is survived by his wife of sixty-five years, Helen Brake Barges and their three children: Linda Strine of Chambersburg, John (husband of Beverly) Barges Jr. of Chambersburg, and David (husband of VaDenea) Barges of Greencastle. He has three grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. John is also survived by a sister, Viola Higgins of St. Thomas. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one sister and four brothers. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, November 30, 2012, at Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home, Ltd., St. Thomas with Rev. Floyd Myers officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7 till 9 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service on Friday. Interment will be held at Parklawn Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Thomas Volunteer Fire Company, 34 School House Road, St. Thomas, Pa, 17252.
