Robert E. Howell Robert E. "Cowboy" Howell, 72, of Mercersburg, died peacefully September 19th, in his home with his family by his side. Born August 21, 1941 at McConnellsburg, he was a son of Grace Fox Howell of Harrisonville and the late Hartford H. Howell. After schooling he began working full time at a local farm and service station. In 1963 he became a member of the Washington DC Area Carpenter's Union #1665 where he did carpentry work for 38 years. In 1974 he joined Elmer Timberman Lodge #54, F&AM. Later he became active with Shriner's Kena Lodge & the Kena Clowns for ill children. Bob was also a member of Scottish Rites & the Blue Lodge. He belonged to local clubs such as VFW #6241, American Legion #517, and Moose #1790 all of Mercersburg. Life member of NRA Bob was known for always having on his cowboy hat and boots. He had a diehard devotion to his Chevy trucks. He loved to hunt and also collect guns. Bob and his wife, Thelma L. Bivens Howell, whom he married January 1981, both brought 2 children into the marriage from previous relationships. Surviving children are Hartford S. & wife Susan Howell of Perry County, Mark & his wife Nina Howell of California, Robert Dean of Texas and Debora Mose of Mercersburg. Grandchildren, JoAnn Epperson of Mercersburg, who was the light of his life, and Stanley & wife Michelle Howell, and several other grandchildren. Also surviving are three great grandchildren to whom he was a father figure & whom he treasured & adored, Hailee, Austin, and Autumn Epperson, and two other great grandchildren, Alaya & Areil Howell. Seven sisters, Dorothy Peck of McConnellsburg, Marie Stevens and Alice Myers both of Chambersburg, Peggy Wagner of Harrisonville, Bonnie Mills of Shippensburg, Wanda Boivja of Virginia, and Wilma Barner of Tennessee. One brother, Hartford Howell, Jr. of Virginia, and his dearest & closet friend, Michael Bivens. In addition to his father he was preceded in death by a grandson, Jason Mose and a brother, Ronald Howell. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM September 25th at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home Inc., Mercersburg with Pastor Vera Keith officiating. Burial will be at Laurel Ridge Christian Church Cemetery, Big Cove Tannery. Viewing 6 to 9 PM Tuesday at the funeral home.
