William Batts Obituary

William Stanley "Bill" Batts, 66, died Wednesday, November 16, 2011at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, North Carolina.

Born February 16, 1945 in Washington, D.C., he was the son of Bernard "Jack" Batts and Elma Horne Batts.

Bill grew up in Wheaton, Maryland and was a student in Carnegie Mellon's College of the Arts, focusing on ceramics and painting. Bill spent his life as an artist/potter, investigating the complexities of clay and glazes.

He is survived by his mother, Elma Horne Batts of Jacksonville, North Carolina; two sons, David Bartl Batts of Washington D.C. (partner David Stacy) and Jason William Batts of Pittsburgh (wife Kelly) and his granddaughter, Adrianna Batts.

Bill is also survived by his former wife and friend, Pam Bartl of Chambersburg, her sister, Deborah Bartl of Fayetteville, Deb's daughter, Natasha Goessel and her family of Chambersburg and his former brother-in-law, Richard Wassil and sons, Christopher Wassil, Michael Wassil and John Wassil of Fayetteville. In addition, there are many aunts, uncles and cousins in the Jacksonville, North Carolina area.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jack Batts, and twin infant sons, John and Aaron Bartl Batts.

The funeral service was held on Saturday, November 19, 2011 at the Community Funeral Home in Beulaville, North Carolina.
Bill was laid to rest in the Horne Family Cemetery in Richlands, North Carolina.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Fight Crime: Invest in Kids, 1212 New York Avenue NW, Suite 300, Washington, DC 20005, www.fightcrime.org.
