Ralph L. Smith Mr. Ralph Lee Smith, 89, of 1099 Appleway Road, St. Thomas, PA, passed away Friday, August 15, 2014 in his home. Born October 19, 1924 in Chambersburg, PA, he was the son of the late Paul W. and Carrie E. (Stoner) Smith. Mr. Smith received his GED from Chambersburg High School in 1970. He served in the United States Army during World War II in the European Theater with the 160th Combat Engineers. He and his wife, the late Mary A. (Beckner) Smith, were married July 17, 1943 in Hagerstown, MD. Mrs. Smith died on January 14, 2013. Following his discharge from the service, Mr. Smith was employed at Frick Company, Waynesboro for a number of years. He later was employed for Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg for 30 1/2 years. He retired April 1, 1983. He also worked part time at ACME Store in Chambersburg for 35 years and as a mechanic at Audrey Stouffer's Garage, Waynesboro for seven years. Mr. Smith was a member of Faith United Methodist Church where he served on the Administrative Board, Board of Trustees, Pastor Parish Relations Committee and was a member of Crider's Sunday school class. He also was a member of George Washington Lodge #143 F. & A.M., Chambersburg, where he served as head steward for many years, Harrisburg Consistory of Harrisburg, PA, Franklin County Shrine Club, South Penn Scottish Rite Club, Tall Cedars of Hagerstown, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #842, Chambersburg, Owls Club, William Max McLaughlin VFW Post #695 and Mechanics Steam Fire Engine & Hose Company #1, all of Waynesboro, life member of South Mountain Fish and Game Association, AmericanLegion Post #26, Chambersburg, Chambersburg Chapter of AARP, National Association of Retired Federal Employees and National AARP. He was also a lifetime member of Zembo Shrine in Harrisburg, where he served as steward. He also was honored to have driven many children from the local area to the Shriner's Hospital in Philadelphia, including his own grandson. He is survived by eight children, Joan L. Gress of Shippensburg, PA, Alicia M. Stitely of Waynesboro, Carol L. May (Jerry) of Chambersburg, Lorna J. Geesaman (Dale) of McConnellsburg, PA, Carla S. Kent (Steve) of Bozeman, MT, Vicki L. Lemmon (Gary) of St. Thomas, Rosemary L. Wheeles (Philip) of Fayetteville, PA and Ralph L. Smith, II of Chambersburg; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Dorothy M. Witten of Harvest, AL and Patricia Beltz and Evelyn Fleagle, both of Chambersburg; two brothers, Ray C. Smith of New Windsor, NY, and Donald E. Smith of Waynesboro; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three grandchildren, Victoria Smith, Stephen Stitely, and Christine Geesaman; two sisters, Betty Smith and Marie Scott; and four brothers, Paul W. Smith, Jr., Robert Smith, William E. Smith and Henry Wagner. Services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, August 19, 2014, in the chapel at Parklawns Memorial Gardens, 3218 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg, with Pastor Matthew Smith and Pastor Sam Myers officiating. Burial will follow in the adjacent cemetery, where military honors will be conducted by the honor guard of Charles Nitterhouse V.F.W. Post #1599, Chambersburg. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M., Monday evening, in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, where a Masonic service will be held at 7:30 P.M., by the members of George Washington Lodge #143. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children, 3551 N. Broad St., Philadelphia, PA 19140-4131.
