Dennis W. Bender, 63, of Syracuse, N.Y., passed away Thursday, November 15, 2012, in the Crown Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, Cortland, N.Y. He was born October 13, 1949, in Chambersburg, Franklin County. Dennis was a son of the late Kenneth H. and Elizabeth B. Reineman Bender. Dennis served in the United States Navy for 22 years and was in the Naval Reserves for an additional eight years. During his service he was assigned to the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt, and received the National Defense Service Medal and the Navy Achievement Medal. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association. At the time of his death he was employed by Centro Bus Company of Syracuse, N.Y., in the maintenance department. Dennis enjoyed reading, especially western novels. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Ronald E. Bender. He is survived by a son, Casey F. Bender of Syracuse, N.Y., one brother, Gary K. Bender of Orrstown, three sisters, Shirley L. Porter of Chambersburg, Debra K. Brumbach of Douglasville, and Kathy S. Coppens of Orrstown. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 21, 2012, in the Orrstown United Brethren Church at 11 a.m. Officiating will be The Rev. Kenneth E. Williamson. Burial with military honors conducted by the Shippensburg VFW and American Legion Posts will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.
