Mrs. Mary Alice (Beckner) Smith, 86, of 1099 Apple Way, St. Thomas, passed away Monday, January 14, 2013 in Chambersburg Hospital. Born January 21, 1926 in Waynesboro, she was the daughter of the late David C. and Laura E. (Kline) Beckner. She spent her early life in Waynesboro, moving to Chambersburg in 1968. Mrs. Smith was a graduate of Waynesboro High School with the Class of 1943. She and her husband of over 69 years, Mr. Ralph Lee Smith, were married July 17, 1943 in Hagerstown, MD. During World War II, Mrs. Smith was employed at Frick Company, Waynesboro. She later worked as a clerk at ACME in Chambersburg and occasionally at other area stores until her retirement in 1982. Following her retirement, she was employed at Frey's Dairy, Chambersburg for several years. She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church; Waynesboro where she served was active with the United Methodist Women and was a member of Cheerful Givers Sunday school class. She also was a member of National AARP. In addition to her husband, she is survived by eight children, Joan L. Gress of Shippensburg, PA, Alicia M. Stitely of Waynesboro, Carol L. May (Jerry) of Chambersburg, Lorna J. Geesaman (Dale) of McConnellsburg, Carla S. Kent (Steve) of Bozeman, MT, Vicki L. Lemmon (Gary) of St. Thomas, Rosemary L. Smith (Philip) of Fayetteville, and Ralph L. Smith, II of Chambersburg; 37 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three grandchildren, Victoria Smith, Christine Geesaman, and Stephen Stitely; one sister, Esther Jones; and four brothers, JosephBeckner, George Beckner, Earl Beckner, and Glenn Beckner. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, January 18, 2013 in Parklawn Memorial Gardens, 3218 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday evening, in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro.
