Eugene Howe Obituary

Eugene Howe, 84, of Chambersburg, died Monday, March 4, 2013 at ManorCare Health Services. Born October 12, 1928 in Phillipsburg, he was a son of the late Orvis V. Howe and Adda Grace George Howe. Eugene was a graduate of the Robertsdale High School and served as Rifleman with the US Army during WWII and the Korean Conflict Eras. Upon his discharge from the military, he began his career in 1958 at the former Olmsted Air Force Base in Middletown. Then in 1966, he transferred to Letterkenny Army Depot in Chambersburg, from which he retird in 1989 as an Air Force Missile Systems Specialist. Eugene enjoyed studying the history of Broad Top Mountain and its local coal mining industry. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Burt J. Asper Post 46 American Legion, both in Chambersburg. A loyal Penn State football fan, many of his other interests centered around the outdoors and included gardening, hunting and fishing. He will be remembered as a true patriot, an avid gardener, and most of all, a man who was passionately devoted to his family. Eugene is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marian Snyder Howe, whom he married May 20, 1950 in Uniontown; three children, Ann L. Underkoffler and husband, Scott, of Chambersburg, Rosemary L. Radocha and husband, Jerry, of Whitehall, and Jerry E. Howe and wife, Jeannine, of Chambersburg; a daughter-in-law, Vickie Howe of Chambersburg; ten grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Ada Ruth Yingling of Clearfield, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Aside from his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Jay R. Howe, and a brother, Charles C. Howe. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 9, 2013 in First United Methodist Church, Chambersburg, with Rev. Dick Williams officiating. The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Saturday in the church. Interment in Lincoln Cemetery will be private. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Central PA Chapter, 2040 Linglestown Road, Suite 104, Harrisburg, PA 17110 or to First United Methodist Church, 225 South Second Street, Chambersburg, PA 17201. Mrs. Howe & Family,
I was lucky to have worked 9 years with and for Gene. One thing I remember of Gene is that he always treated a person more like family than an employee. I thought very highly of Gene.
