Although I often think of Joe, and Karen, it's always a sad reminder when this message hits my computer each December just before his date of passing. I miss them both and believe they're in a better place.

Dear Jill,

I came to know your parents some twenty-five years ago through your mother's alterations business. Joe and Karen were such kind and talented individuals with wonderful senses of humor. I will always have fond memories of them and miss having them around to brighten up the town.

Dear Jill,

I was so sorry to hear of your dad's passing. You may remember me as Paula Wehrle Shaffer's daughter, Lynn. We would visit your mom and dad occasionally when you and I were children. About 8 years or so ago, I went to see your dad to ask about doing a very special drawing for me to give to my husband as a Christmas gift. I took him a photo of my husband Jack's 1930 Model A Ford Pickup, and he did an absolutely fantastic job! It is very treasured and I have the added bonus that we have a piece of art done by my cousin. He was so very talented, and I know he was so very proud of you! You have my deepest sympathies, Jill.

Your cousin,
Lynn Shaffer Hicks

Dear Jillian,
I was a friend of your father some time ago through a writer's group we started here in Indiana, PA. Your mother was a member as well. They were wonderful people. I have saved some of the hand drawn Christmas cards Joe made and sent me. I was extremely sorry to hear of his passing and extend my deepest sympathies to you and your family.

I never met Mr Wehrle, but he was kind enough to send me some copies of his artwork after he learned that I had worked on GROUNDHOG DAY. Punxsutawney Phil indeed. I will always cherish these and will miss him greatly.

Hi Jillian,
I am a classmate of your dad's. We had the added bond that we shared the same birthday, he was a few hours older than I.
I always looked forward to seeing him when I was in Punxsy
He was a very special person & I will miss him.

I have fond memories of Joe as a childhood playmate on West Mahoning Street in the 40's when we were very young.
Even at that young age, he was showing his enthusiasm for artwork and his favorite comic book hero was "The Phantom." May God bless Joe's family with many fond memories.

Joe and I have worked together for the past four years on The Digest Enthusiast. He was the magazine's most avid contributor, creating portraits, illustrations, articles, and original fiction. He just completed the cover for the seventh edition. We never met, but carried on our friendship over email. His love for the creative artscomics, illustration, and fiction in particularwas obvious, and he often shared stories of some of his favorite artists and writers.

I know from our correspondence, his daughter Jillian, and her husband, Jim, where an important part of his life. Please accept my condolences. Joe's passing is a great loss to all those who knew him.

We just moved back to Punxsy a year ago after being away for 31 years. Joe had my husband in school for art class when he was in 8th grade. Your dad was the best neighbor we have ever had. Last January my husband had his hip replaced and every time when I went out to shovel snow your dad was right there helping me. The last time we saw Joe was on Thanksgiving. We will miss him greatly. He gave us two ink drawings of his Christmas cards that we will treasure. He told me one day that he only ever had one girlfriend his whole life which was your mother. We are so sorry for your loss.

To Jillian and Jim. Was shocked to hear of Joe's passing. My wife Jeannine and I just saw him this past September and he seemed to be doing well. I have never met you but I consider Joe to be of my best friends growing up. I graduated with Joe and we spent a lot of time together while in high school. He was a great artist and a very dedicated man. I know he missed Karen after she passed away. I am very sorry for your loss and at sometime in the future I would love to meet you when we return to Punxsy. Joe Sheeser
