1928 - 2013 Obituary Condolences
James "Jim" Johnson, a resident of Palos Verdes Estates, passed away at his home on December 31st. 2013, at the age of 85. Jim was born on August 13, 1928. He was the only son of Ellen Johnson (nee Maher) and Ivan "Ching" Johnson, who was a Hockey Hall of Fame defenseman for the New York Rangers.

Jim was a member of Michigan University's 1945 NCAA hockey champions and lettered in basketball and track & field at the University of Maryland where he was awarded the Silvester Watch as "typifying the best in athletics" and graduated at the top of his class with a B.S. degree in 1952. He subsequently went on to earn an M.S. degree at the University of Illinois.

After his graduation from university and until his retirement in 1993, Jim had a remarkably varied working career, both here in the United States and in South America. He served as a coach, Peace Corps Director, upper management in the food industry, and even independent business owner.

Jim was a passionate person, showing an enthusiasm for all aspects of life. This included having strong feelings for others, a trait that drove him to have deep compassion for people, especially those in trying circumstances. Throughout it all, Jim displayed a unique sense of humor that uplifted the many who crossed his path.

Jim is survived by his wife, Joan; two sons, Brett and Scott of California; a daughter, Cindy, her husband, Knut Aasheim, and two grandchildren, Stefanie and Christopher, of Norway: and a sister, Geraldine Windham, of Maryland.
