Archie Petrovich Obituary
Archie Petrovich

Archie Petrovich, 97, died on February 23, 2018, at his home in Long Beach, CA. Archie Petrovich was born to George Petrovich and Anitz Christovich-Petrovich on September 21, 1920 in Wilmington, California. A first-generation Serbian-American, Archie's family came from the humblest of origins. The youngest of six children and raised during the Great Depression, Archie learned the value of hard work and determination at an early age. Although Archie was born with a withered arm, he was graced with a natural athleticsm. Despite his disability, he was an All-Star pitcher at both Banning and San Pedro High School. He went on to play minor league baseball, at one time playing against the immortal Jackie Robinson. He finished his baseball career pitching for longshoreman baseball teams during his career on the docks. The consumate sportsman, he played golf into his 90's, even shooting a hole-in-one in his 80's. Archie had a remarkable intellect, ready wit, and an incredible memory. As one of the earliest members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU), Archie proudly served in leadership positions for Local 63. He fought ardently for union rights and was well respected by those that knew him. He spent 38 years of his life as a Marine Clerk Chief Supervisor at Indies Terminals in the Port of Long Beach, retiring in 1984. In retirement, Archie could be found doting over family and his beloved pets, reading action and adventure novels, and talking or watching baseball. On April 18, 1942 he married the love of his life and best friend, Mary Christine Weathers. A woman of remarkable beauty and grace, Mary was the source of Archie's happiness for 67 years. Although she preceded in him in death by almost nine years, she never left his his heart nor mind. Theirs was a timeless love story that will last for eternity. He is survived by both his sons, Danny Petrovich and Nathan Campobasso; his two daughters-in-law, Terrie Petrovich and Rebecca Campobasso; his grandchildren, Josette Campobasso-Espinosa, Daniel Petrovich, and Cynthia Petrovich; his great grandchildren, Nathan Espinosa (Stephanie Espinosa), Andrea Espinosa-Connolly (The Honorable Pat Connolly), Breanna McCartney, Jessica McCartney, Nathan Gomez, Nicole Gomez, Joshua Petrovich and Kelly Petrovich; his great-great grandchild, Giuliana Espinosa. The funeral service will be held at 11:30 AM on March 6, 2018 in Green Hills Memorial Chapel in RPV, CA. Please sign the guestbook at www.dailybreeze.com.
