Benjamin, the son of Czechoslovakian immigrant parents, Steven and Anna Hlastala, was born in Eveleth, Minnesota in 1923. He attended Eveleth public schools and joined the Army during WWll. He used the GI bill following the war graduating from Marquette University in Wisconsin with a BA in History. He moved to California in the early 50's looking for a warmer climate. He worked in the Finance Department at Richfield Oil in downtown Los Angeles and met Beulah Hahle at a church social. They married in 1953. He then attended night school and obtained a teaching credential. He worked for LAUSD, Fleming Jr. High School, teaching business math and typing until his retirement in 1988. He enjoyed many years of retirement activities often amazed that he was retired more years than he had worked. He had many traveling adventures. Ben and Bee both kept active with round and square dancing into their mid-eighties. He was an avid Notre Dame football fan. He enjoyed camping, fishing, gardening, playing cribbage and kings corners and especially enjoyed quality time with family and friends. He passed away following a short illness in Torrance on January 24, 2018. He is predeceased by his parents and six siblings. He is survived by his sister, Irene Hlastala; daughter, Nancy Bridi (David); granddaughter, Julia Bridi (Kristian Freel); grandson, Anthony Bridi (Amy Beran); great-granddaughters, Olivia Freel and Bee Bridi and great-grandsons, Ben Bridi and Beau Bridi; nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. The Memorial Mass for Mr. Hlastala will be held at 10am Saturday, February 10, 2018 at Nativity Catholic Church, 1447 Engracia Ave, Torrance, CA 90501. A reception will follow immediately after the memorial mass.
