Dixie Blackwelder Obituary
Dixie Blackwelder

There will be a memorial service for Dixie Blackwelder on Sunday, March 3, 2019 at 11:30am at the First Baptist Church, 555 W. 7th St., San Pedro.

Born Florene Dix Gibson in Long Beach, CA on January 14, 1928, to parents Mina & John S. Gibson, Jr. Her father was an L.A. city councilman for 30 years. She was known to everyone as "Dixie". (According to family lore, she was born in the hospital elevator.) Raised in San Pedro, she attended 7th Street School, Dana Jr. High and graduated from San Pedro High 1946.

She met her future husband, Wilson Dean Blackwelder, while still in high school. He joined the Alpha Gamma Omega fraternity at UCLA in 1945, and "pinned" Dixie on Columbus Day that year.

Dixie was an accomplished vocalist and violinist, and shared her music generously throughout her life.

She and Dean were married in the fall of 48 at the first Baptist Church, to a full house. Dean then attended Fuller Seminary & Dixie attended right alongside him: although without earning a degree, she was the first woman to audit classes at Fuller Seminary. They both felt called to the mission field at an early age.

They left San Pedro in 1951, to spend 30 years sharing the Good News of Jesus in North and South Brazil. Dixie was the mother of four, and raised her children to participate with her in their ministry.

Dixie & Dean retired in 1981 & came back to San Pedro to care for her aging parents. She is survived by her husband, 4 children & their spouses, 10 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. She passed away Thursday, February 28, 2019, surrounded by family singing hymns. We thank God for her life and legacy. Please sign the guestbook at www.dailybreeze.com/obits
