5/7/1932 - 12/11/2018 Dorothy Rengel Munn passed away in her home in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA on December 11, 2018 at age 86. Dorothy was born on May 7, 1932 in Minneapolis, MN to Julius & Clara (Hoffman) Rengel. As a teen in Minneapolis she won the Silver Skates speed skating race, and was the all-city singles tennis champion. Dorothy was Valedictorian of the Academy of Holy Angels H.S. She graduated with a B.S. in Chemistry and a minor in P.E. from the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, Phi Beta Kappa. She earned an M.S. in Chemistry from Univ. of Maryland, and taught there. At age 25, she toured Europe, and climbed to top of 14,692 ft. Matterhorn. Early in her career she taught chemistry, math & tennis at U.S. Air Force bases in Canada & Japan. Very religious, she discerned becoming a nun while teaching chemistry for 2 years at a Catholic high school in Nebraska. In 1964 she moved to the South Bay. She worked as a research organic chemist, obtaining international patents. She was also a real estate agent and broker. Dorothy married Leon Munn in 1965. After her children were born, she worked for L.A. County Parks & Recreation, and for The Daily Breeze. She taught math, chemistry & physics at various elementary & high schools in the South Bay area, finishing her career at North Torrance H.S. She was also a coach & referee of tennis, volleyball & basketball. Predeceased by her parents, brother Dick Rengel, sister Diane Cook, and son Daniel. Survived by ex-husband Leon, sons Michael, John (wife Noelle) & David (wife Rosa), grandchildren Laurel, Jackie, Patricia, Jordan, Andrew & Eric. A Funeral Mass will be offered at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 1292 W. Santa Cruz St., San Pedro, CA 90732 on Saturday, January 5th at 10am.
