January 21, 1924 - September 20, 2018 Harold Whitman Garvin passed away Sept. 20, 2018 at the age of 94. Born Jan. 21, 1924 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Harold Thomas Garvin and Marguerite White Whitman Garvin, Hal was raised in Gardena, California. Hal joined the Army Air Corp at 18, flew 50 missions with the 759th Bomb Squadron and earned 7 battle stars during WWII. Later, he attended Occidental College and majored in Political Science. There he met Frances Elizabeth Rhoades, his loving and devoted wife of 71 years. He then attended USC and earned a master's degree in Political Science. Hal began teaching in 1948 at Dana Jr. High School in San Pedro CA. Three years later he transferred to San Pedro High School where he taught history and made many lifelong friends. Hal then moved over to the Los Angeles Community College District and taught Political Science and World History at L.A. Harbor Community College from 19611979. Hal enjoyed golf, tennis, paddle tennis and poker, but his passions were family, traveling and history/politics. Combining these three passions, Hal took the Garvin family on a five-month trip to Europe in 1967-68. They traveled throughout Europe in a VW van, experiencing history and culture and then traveled home on an extended cruise through the Panama Canal. Hal created a once in a lifetime experience for his family. Hal, an active Democrat in Los Angeles, was involved in many clubs and organizations. He ran for political office three times and in 1979 was elected to the LA Community College Board of Trustees and served faithfully for 12 years, eventually becoming President. Hal was a man who cared deeply for others and demonstrated this in his professional life, his community activities, friendships and especially with his family. He will be greatly missed. Hal is survived by his wife, Frances and their 3 children, Linda Benson (Donald), Beth Berry (James), and Buzz Garvin (Sandy). They have 7 grandchildren; Benjamin, Whitney, Matthew, Spencer, Robert, Danielle and Rebekah. Also, 4 great-grandchildren; Lewis, Marley, Emma and Harlyn, with one more on the way. Sister Gracia Green, pre-deceased Hal, but Marguerite Aldrich (99), Anna Steuwer (90) and Calvin Garvin (88) survive their brother.
