Howard Marx Obituary
Howard Marx, Sr.
1922 - 2018

Howard Flemin Marx passed away after a short illness on January 6, 2018. He is survived by his son, Howard Flemin Marx, Jr. (Chip), his daughter, Linda Marx Condy, and two grandchildren.
Howard was born and raised in Monroe, Louisiana, son of Albert & Birdie Marx. He married his devoted wife, Elizabeth (Betsy) Lewis Marx, started their family in Texas and moved to California in 1963. Betsy passed in away in 1983 and in 1991, Howard married long-time friend, Mildred Sokolski Marx. They traveled the world together and were active in the Palos Verdes community until Mildred passed away in 2011.
Howard loved aeronautics. During WWII, he served as a Navy lieutenant on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Franklin Roosevelt. With a master's degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he had a rich career, discovering an advance in navigation that would later have people referring to him as the grandfather of GPS.
Howard was a founding member and co-chair of the AIAA's (American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics) Wright Flyer Project, which reconstructed the original Wright brothers' flyer, and provided the first detailed analysis of the plane's aerodynamics.
Those who knew Howard were aware of his infectious smile, firm handshake, and his ability to spur laughter with one of his jokes or stories. He could often be found on the golf course, driving his red MG, or flying his Cessna airplane. On a nice day, Howard would look at the sky and say, "This is a good day to be flying in the air above the clouds." Please sign the guestbook at www.dailybreeze.com/obits
