July 18, 1956 - Jan. 6, 2019 With deepest sorrow, we announce that John Steven Russo, at age 62, passed suddenly & unexpectedly on Sunday January 6th in the hospital with family at his bed side. He was survived by his four children; Salvatore, Melissa, Nick, and Megan Russo. John has three grandchildren; Riley, Ryan, & Rainey. He was born in San Pedro on July 18th, 1956 to Salvatore & Gloria Russo. He was the oldest of his three other siblings; survived by brother: Jack Russo (Fran, children: Salvatore, Joseph, Anthony), sister: Gina Mineo (Salvatore, son: Matthew) and preceded by his brother Salvatore David Russo. John was a commercial fisherman for over 25 years. He began fishing with his father at the young age of fourteen. He fished most of his career in San Pedro, as far south as Mexican waters, and even spent two seasons fishing in Alaska. No one would forget that the Tootur was the first boat to catch the "Big" 700 pound Bluefin Tuna. After losing their family's fishing boat the Tootur to Hurricane Darby, John gave up his first love of fishing and dedicated his career working for the ILWU for the next twenty plus years. He was a member of the local 63. John's family & close friends who really knew him, loved him for his kind heart, humor and his generosity. He truly loved his family, close friends and his two dogs Blue & Frankie. He will be remembered for his "lively" character and strong convictions and antics from his young adulthood. Some antics will be stories that friends will never forget. Rosary & Funeral Mass will be offered on Tuesday, January 15th at 10:00 am at Mary Star of The Sea Church in San Pedro. Family and close friends are invited to attend the scattering of ashes later that evening. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Siberian husky Rescue/ Referral of California or . Please sign the guestbook at mcnerneysmortuary.com.
