Katherine Irene Peale Tanner Obituary
Katherine Irene Peale Tanner
6/11/1917 – 12/22/2017

Kay Tanner passed peacefully at Sunrise Palos Verdes at the age of 100. A nearly life-long resident of the San Pedro area, Kay (known to some as Katie) was born in Los Angeles to Sherman and Hedwig Peale. After a short stay in Broken Bow, Nebraska, the family moved to San Pedro when Katherine was two. The family owned the 22nd Street Market at the corner of 22nd and Pacific, and Kay told many stories of her idyllic childhood on the harbor. After completing San Pedro High School, she attended UCLA, pledged Sigma Kappa sorority – and she was a Bruin for life! Katie married Fred Clark "Bick" Tanner in 1940, and their only child, Charles Bick, was born in 1942. They traveled extensively, including to her mother's native Norway. She worked at the original Miraleste High School and for a local doctor before retiring to golf, dance and knit; besides many family garments, in her lifetime Kay knitted thousands of pairs of baby booties for Little Company of Mary Hospital. Kay loved to spend time volunteering at the South Coast Botanical Gardens; she was also active in the Masons and Shriners, as well as the Elks and Republican Women's Clubs.
Predeceased by her husband and son, Katherine is survived by her daughter-in-law Jo Ann Tanner, six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Kay always lit up a room and is now wearing her tap shoes in heaven! In lieu of any gift of flowers, Kay requested donations to , Los Angeles.
Services are 2:00 PM on Saturday, 1/6/18 at Green Hills Memorial Park Chapel. Reception to follow. Please sign the guest book, www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
