Martha Bannister Obituary
Martha Jane Bannister

Martha Jane, loving wife, mother of four, grandmother of five, great-grandmother of six, dedicated PEO member, and retired teacher of 25 years – came Home on Tuesday, January 23, 2018. She is survived by her sons, Donald, William, and David Bannister, and by her daughter Nancy Ericksen, who all were blessed to share one last Christmas with her before her passing.

Martha Jane was born Aug. 16, 1926 in Joliette, IL, and moved to Santa Monica, CA in 1936. There she attended high school and graduated from Santa Monica City College in 1943, taking classes at UCLA and earning a Bachelor's degree at Occidental College. She later earned a teaching credential from the University of Redlands, beginning a long career working with children from kindergarten-age to junior high. She married her husband Robert on June 25, 1949.

As a minister's wife, she fulfilled multiple roles as Robert served in St. Paul, MN, and all over Southern California in Santa Monica, San Juan Capistrano, Yucaipa, and Redondo Beach. They both sang in church choirs in Redondo Beach, Rancho Palos Verdes, Redlands, as well as Lac du Flambeau, WI near the family cabin. Wherever they went, Martha Jane strove to make things better with her singular creativity and charm, organizing school and church functions, directing children's choirs, and teaching Sunday school. She loved to create and share, frequently working til the wee hours on dozens of home-made craft projects for her students or fellow community members, surrounded by an ever-growing collection of teddy bears.

Martha Jane is now reunited in Heaven with her husband Bob, sister, Celia, and their brother, George.

Memorial services are to be held on Saturday, March 3 at 10:00AM at the First Presbyterian Church of Redlands at 100 Cajon St., with reception and light lunch provided by Martha Jane's PEO chapter at Trinity Episcopal Church at 419 South 4th St. In lieu of flowers, and to honor her love of music and children, please send donations to: Education Through Music
