Masako Hooper Obituary

Masako Hooper

August 16, 1934 – October 8, 2017

Masako Hooper passed away at Torrance Memorial Hospital on Sunday October 8, 2017 at the age of 83. Masako was born on the tiny island of Miyako, about 500 miles south of Japan. She grew up in the town of Karimata and lived there until graduating high school at the age of 18. From there, Masako spent time in Okinawa and Kagoshima, Japan.

Masako moved to the United States in 1965 with her husband and six children, alternating years between the United States and Okinawa until she and her family permanently moved to the United States in 1973. Masako had lived in California, the Midwest, and East Coast until moving to Torrance in 1993, where she spent her last 24 years.

Masako was an avid dancer and performed Okinawan and Japanese folk dances with her Okinawan dance troupe throughout the Los Angeles area. She was a member of the Okinawan Association of America and belonged to the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Redondo Beach.

Her personal interests included teaching Japanese Flower Arranging and the Japanese Tea Ceremony and was especially passionate about her bible study.

Masako is survived by her six children: Kenneth, Mike, Eileen, Stephen, John, and Robert. A celebration of Masako's life will be held at Rice Mortuary in Torrance the afternoon of Sunday October 15th at 2pm with a Reception following until 5pm. Masako is one of the greatest friends of my life. I am young enough to be her daughter but we spent hundreds of hours serving our great God Jehovah in the ministry, Bible studies, and meetings. She loved her Bible students and her family very much. She was a beautiful mother and wife, grandmother and friend. We shared the good times and the sad times. Her hospitality and lovely home just drew me to her. We would have lunch at China Buffet. I took her to radiation treatments years ago and watched her strength and courage in action. She loved her family so much and I got to see Robert often. So, my prayer is that Robert and his siblings cherish the memories of mom and imitate her fine qualities in your daily life and soon you have the hope to reunite with both parents on Paradise earth!

I live in the Las Vegas area and I cannot attend the arrangement today but I am thinking of each of you and I know you will demonstrate faith and strength to the end. Thank you for superb care of your parents and maintaining their home.

Masako is one of the greatest friends I have had. I am young enough to be her daughter but we spent hundreds of hours together serving our Great God Jehovah in the ministry, Bible studies and meetings. We have shared good times and sad times. We would have meals together often. We liked the China buffet! I helped take her to radiation treatments years ago and watched her get well with strength and courage. Her home was always kept lovely and her sons kept the house well maintained for their parents. She spoke of her children and grandchildren very fondly. Thank you Hooper family for the superb care for your mother and father! They deserved so much and they raised fine children. Masako loved you very much. May God give you peace and comfort from the holy writings and give you memories and qualities to imitate in Masako my dear friend.
