Phillip J. Bernard "Phil" "Joe" Jr. Obituary
Phillip J. Bernard, Jr. "Phil" "Joe"

April 14, 1931 - June 1, 2018

We sadly announce that Phillip J. Bernard Jr. lost his five year battle with pancreatic cancer, passing peacefully at home with his family by his side. Phil was born and raised in San Pedro, graduating from San Pedro High School in 1949. He started classes at the newly opened Harbor Junior College, but opted to serve his country during the Korean War, enlisting in the Navy. Stationed in Hawaii, Phil developed a passion for accounting while working as a Storekeeper Second Class. After the war, he returned to Harbor College, where he met the love of his life, Virginia Ann Adams. They eloped and were married in Las Vegas on November 16, 1957. Phil worked for several Los Angeles accounting firms while earning a Bachelor of Business Administration from Woodbury College in November 1958. After graduating, he founded Bernard's Bookkeeping Service in San Pedro, changing the name to Phillip J. Bernard, CPA after passing the CPA exam in August 1970. While running a successful practice for more than 20 years he was active in many clubs and service organizations including the Civitans, JCs and San Pedro Chamber of Commerce. He was a lifetime member of the DB Club and Elks 966 and a president of the San Pedro Rotary Club. When not serving his community, he enjoyed family trips to Catalina on his boat, the Sassea, and golfing as a member of the Rolling Hills and Palos Verdes Country Clubs. After his beloved Sassea sunk during the Cabrillo Marina expansion, Phil took to the air. He passed his pilots exam in 1989 and found a new love: a Beechcraft Bonanza V-Tail (N7906D). He enjoyed fly ins with the Torrance Hanger Group throughout California, Nevada and Arizona. When on solid ground, Phil collected numerous classic cars including a 1961 Lincoln Continental, a 1963 Studebaker Avanti and most recently, a 1928 Model T hot rod. After selling his accounting practice, Phil and Virginia retired to Dana Point where he enjoyed boating and golfing with the San Clemente Men's Club. After nine years they moved to Bermuda Dunes, joining the Bermuda Dunes Country Club. Phil fulfilled a life's dream by playing The Bob Hope Classic in 2003 and 2009. In 2012, Phil and Virginia returned to San Pedro and he continued his passion for golf into his 80s with the Lakewood Men's Club, Los Verdes Men's Club and Los Verdes Seniors. Phil was preceded in death by his parents, Phillip Sr. and Frances (Marino), He is survived by his wife of 60 years Virginia; children, Cindy Bernard, Linda (Dennis) Bracken, Christine (Rob) Rubin and Phillip J. (Antoinette) Bernard III; grandchildren, Brian, Chelsea and Hayley (Bracken), Cole and Alec (Rubin), Phillip IV, Jacob and Grace (Bernard). A funeral mass will be offered on Monday, June 11th 10:30am at Mary Star of the Sea Church in San Pedro followed by interment at Green Hills Memorial Park.
