Sabatino (Sam) Capaldi Obituary
Sabatino (Sam) Capaldi

Sabatino (Sam) Capaldi passed away on February 25th at the age of 97 in Redondo Beach, Ca. He shared 66 years of marriage with his loving wife, Helen (Stark) who he met at a party at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Born in Pennsylvania, Sam's family moved to Detroit to start a grocery store business when Sam was a youngster. Sam's talent for both music and mathematics quickly became evident. He attended the University of Michigan on a scholarship and was a member of the university's marching band, but majored in engineering. Sam worked as an engineer in the automotive industry in the Detroit area until the early 70s when he and Helen moved to Los Angeles with their three children. For the next 35 years, Sam worked as an engineer in the aerospace industry at Northrup Grumman and at several other area contractors. Sam enjoyed playing oboe and clarinet in a variety of music groups, including the Palos Verdes Symphonic Band. He performed with the Rolling Hills Covenant Church Orchestra, where he attended services, in many of the Pageants of our Lord. Until age 95, Sam taught oboe to young adults to ensure that his legacy as a musician would live on after he was gone. In retirement, Sam loved watching classic movies and musicals and watching Michigan football. Sam will be greatly missed by his daughters, Pamela and Nancy (Hanflik), his son, Eric, and two grandsons, Jason Hanflik and Nicholas Capaldi. He was predeceased by his wife, Helen. A graveside service will be held on Friday, March 2nd at 2 p.m. at Green Hills Cemetery. Memorial donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Milestone Hospice, Family Connect Care or Rolling Hills Covenant Church. Sign guestbook at dailybreeze.com
