1930 - 2018 Obituary Condolences
Sept. 12, 1930 - Nov. 20, 2018 Tony P. Apodaca was born on September 12, 1930 to Antonio U. Apodaca and Maria P. Apodaca in Downtown Los Angeles. Born during The Great Depression helped shape his dreams, determination, outlook on life and influence for his family to strive, work hard and to achieve their dreams and goals. Tony was a long time resident of San Pedro California. In 1947, he joined the National Guard and then joined the army in the same year. He was in the occupant forces in Japan after World War II. He was part of the 24th infantry division, task force smith. Tony was in the battle of Osan which was the first engagement between the US and North Korean forces during the Korean War on July 5, 1950. In that battle, Tony was combat wounded and received a Purple Heart. After recovering in a Japanese hospital, he was sent back and landed in Incheon with the Marines. He marched his way to the Manchurian border and fought the Chinese in the snow. Tony received a Bronze Star for his second tour, came home and met his wife, Nellie Trebotic in 1954 while working at McDonnell Douglas. They got married in 1955 and had two children, Sonia Miliana and Erik Matthew Apodaca. After Sonia was born, Tony began working as a Longshoreman in 1959 and retired after 52 years at the age of 80. He was a life member at the San Pedro Elks Lodge, a parish member of Mary Star of the Sea and a member of the International Korean War Veterans Memorial Association. He is survived by his wife, Nellie; children, Erik and wife Leticia Apodaca and Sonia and husband Guy Nelson and grandchildren, Adriana Marie Apodaca and Kristofer Nelson. Tony was a kind and generous man who always told his kids to never judge anyone because you may be in their shoes someday. A viewing will be held at McNerney's Mortuary San Pedro Thursday, November 29th from 5pm-8pm. A Funeral Mass will be offered on Friday, November 30, 2018, 10:30 a.m. at Mary Star of the Sea Parish followed by interment at Green Hills Memorial Park.
