Sanchez Sr., Benito - Albuquerque  
Benito Sanchez Sr. age 78, passed away in Albuquerque NM on Wednesday March 18, 2015, following an extended illness. Bennie was born January 18, 1937, in Trementina NM, later moving to Tucumcari where he attended the Tucumcari Public School System. He had worked for the Rail Road and later he went to specialized school and started his own upholstery business. Surviving him are his children, Benito Sanchez Jr. of Logan, NM and Loretta Sanchez of Tucumcari, NM; Grandchildren, Cynthia Sanchez, Antonio Carabajal, Delilah Carabajal, Jessie Sanchez, Samantha Gonzales, Benito Sanchez III and Pamela Sanchez. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lourdes; by his parents, Louise and Frances Sanchez; by brother, Louise Sanchez Jr; by granddaughter, Grace Sanchez, and by great grandchildren, Jose Sanchez and Isabella Mejia. Rosary will be recited on Tuesday evening March 24, 2015, in the St. Anne's Catholic Church beginning at 6:00 PM with Funeral Mass being offered on Wednesday Morning, March 25, 2015, in the St. Anne's Catholic Church beginning at 10:00 AM. Pall Bearers will be Benito Sanchez III, Jessie Sanchez, Antonio Carabajal, Santiago Rivera, Bobby Sanchez, Adam Gonzales and Joseph Rivera. Honorary pall bearers will be Great Grandchildren, Amunique Engel, Manuel Baca, Frances Ingram and Adam Jimenez. Burial will take place in the Family plot of the Montoya Cemetery at Montoya New Mexico. Arrangements entrusted to Dunn Funeral Home of Tucumcari ,New Mexico

Smith, Herbert Donald - Storrie Project  
Herbert Donald Smith, 84, a resident of Storrie Project near Las Vegas, NM, passed away at his home on Monday following a brief illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Mozel Smith, and a sister, Nealene Bradley, all of Tucumcari, NM. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Joan of the family home; twin daughters, Donna Hinders and husband Mike of Los Lunas, NM, and Della Boley and husband Willie of Cushing, OK., also a daughter Kathy Holster and husband Michael of Levelland, TX; one son, Robert Smith and wife Tara of Bovey, MN; a sister, Joanne Jones of Clovis, NM; three brothers-in-law: Jerry Bradley of Quay, NM, Jack Robertson and wife Sandra of Sutter, CA, and Don Robertson and wife Barbara of Lubbock, TX; a faithful employee and friend, Gene Apodaca of Las Vegas, NM; nine grandsons and two granddaughters; eleven great-grandchildren and a 23 year old longhorn cow. Don Smith was born in Tucumcari, NM on May 6, 1930. He was raised in Duran, NM, until 6th grade when his family moved to Tucumcari, NM. He played football, basketball and baseball for the Tucumcari Rattlers. He graduated from Tucumcari Public Schools in 1948. He attended NM Highlands University on a football scholarship and also played basketball and baseball. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1951 and was honorably discharged in 1953. He married Joan Robertson on December 22, 1951, and in 1955 he continued his education on a football scholarship at Adams State University in Alamosa, CO for one year after which he returned to NM Highlands University until he graduated with his BA degree in 1956. He taught woodworking, welding, small engines, physical education, and math at various times in his career. He taught in Vaughn, NM, Corona, NM, and for the Las Vegas City Schools. He raised cattle his entire life having been given his first heifer calf as a first year birthday gift from his grandfather. He developed a fine herd of registered Charolais cattle. He and Joan owned and operated the Las Vegas Livestock Cattle auction for seven years. Don was a Farm Bureau member and served on the board. He served on the Storrie Project Board for several years and served as president and treasurer. He served as president of the local and district National Education Association and was a delegate to the National NEA Convention. Cremation has taken place and services celebrating his life was held on Thursday, March 26, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, 201 Mountain View Drive in Las Vegas, NM. Pastor Jesse Boggs officiated.
