Alfred Arsel Haws, age 99, of Logan NM, passed away on January 13, 2017.
He was born December 13, 1917, at Jefferson,Oklahoma. His parents were Grover and Esther Haws. The family lived in Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas, before settling in Clovis, New Mexico.
In 1940 Alfred and his brother Claude were drafted into the US Army during WWII. He attended boot camp at Ft. Bliss in El Paso, Texas for 6 weeks before being shipped to the Philippines. Alfred and the 200th Costal Artillery were engaged in combat with the Japanese until they ran out of bullets and food. The army was forced to surrender and then trek 65 miles to the Bataan Death March to prison camps. Alfred spent one year as a POW in the Philippine Camp where his brother died. The next 2 1/2 years were spent as a POW in Japan where he worked in a steel mill making ammunition and weapons for the Japanese. A week before liberation while Alfred was working, the Americans bombed the mill. He was hit with shrapnel forcing the doctor to remove his arm to save his life. When the war was over, Alfred visited his family and spent a year in the Birmingham City Hospital where he regained his health and they repaired his arm.
Returning to Clovis NM, Alfred joined his father farming. In 1946 he met and married Mary Loyce Moss and had 4 children. He family moved to Montana where Alfred farmed and ranches. Later on he worked for the US Forest Service. After retiring, Alfred and Mary moved back to New Mexico then to Amarillo, TX. After Alfred's wife Mary went to be with the Lord, he moved to Logan NM to live close to his daughter. Alfred lived at the Autumn Blessings Assisted Living before he went on to Heaven.
Alfred is preceded in death by his parents; all of his brothers and sisters; his wife and their first daughter, Robbie Gayle; a grandson, Thane and a great granddaughter, Valerie.
Survivors include his son, Ted Haws & wife Cindy of Lebanon Oregon; daughters, Susan Ireland & husband Ken of Hamilton, Montana and Deloyce Smith & husband Tom of Logan NM; along with 10 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and 16 great great grandchildren.
Services will be Friday, January 20, 2017, at 10AM in the First Baptist Church of Logan NM. Pall bearers will be Steve Smith Nick Murja, Jake Arellano, Phillip Wroble, Reed Murja and Jordan Smith. Honorary bearers will be all grand and great grandchildren. Interment will follow in the Logan Cemetery at Logan New Mexico.
