Arturo S. "Casey" Martinez


Arturo S. "Casey" Martinez Arturo S. "Casey" Martinez, 70, a well known educator and a resident of Las Vegas, passed away on Friday following an illness. Arturo was born on Oct. 23, 1933 in Madera and attended Espanola Schools and graduated from Northern New Mexico Normal High School. He received his B.A. from New Mexico Highlands University and his master's of education at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif. and was in their doctorate program. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was honorably discharged after two years in the fields of communications and artillery during the Korean Conflict. He play baseball for the San Fancisco Giants farm clubs, the Sooner State League in Muskogee, the Evangeline League, Lake Charles, La. and the Eastern League, Springfield, Mass. He taught at St. Peter's High School in Roswell, Santa Cruz High School in Santa Cruz. He was dean of students at Mountain View and Awalt High Schools in the Los Altos School District in Mountain View, Calif., the assistant superintendent of minority affairs and staff development in the Los Altos School District in Mountain View, Calif. He was chairman of the health and physical education department and athletic director and head basketball coach at New Mexico Highlands University. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cleofas and Senaida Martinez Sr.; three brothers, Cleofas Martinez Jr., Delio Martinez and Horacio Martinez; and by two sisters, Fortunata Chavez and Gloria Hopwood. He is survived by his wife Onofre of Las Vegas; two sons, Daryl Martinez of Fort Gibson, Okla., and Barry Martinez (Elaine) of Muskogee, Okla.; three daughters, Elena Gutierrez (Roman), Christie Brown (Gerald) and Lea Martinez all of Muskogee; three sisters Henrietta Castillo of Mantica, Ohio, Nora Salazar (Gilbert) of Chamita and Cora Abeyta of Rio Rancho. Two brothers Andres Martinez (Mary Ann) of Santa Fe and Fernando Martinez of San Francisco; 12 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Services are private. Arrangements were handled by Gonzales Funerals.
