Derri Sue Pender Obituary
Derri Sue Pender may have lived a less than average life span, but she definitely did not live a less than average life. Born on March 9, 1958, in Albuquerque, NM to James and Wynell Sewell, she grew up primarily in Tucumcari with her three brothers Jimmy, Jerry, and Johnny Sewell, and her sister Debbie Sims.
At the ripe old age of nine, she fell in love with the boy next door. Though unlike your typical childhood crush, it turned into one of those disgusting, sappy, storybook romances culminating in her marriage to Danny Pender on May 30, 1980. This nauseating love fest soon spawned three girls, whom they raised with more love and understanding then they sometimes deserved. Sherri (the oldest and obvious favorite); Jessica, her husband Manny, and their son Gabriel Chavez; and Jamie and her husband Matthew Bednorz. We would like to express our condolences to anyone who did not grow up with her as a mother. Really, you missed out.
If you knew her, you knew that she was an unfailingly loyal Cubs fan, without ever having lived a day in Chicago. They say there is no accounting for taste, but she enjoyed rooting for those "love-able losers". There is one thing she loved as much, if not more, and that was being in her garden. She excelled at growing anything and everything, and at enchanting and feeding all the woodland creatures within a ten-mile radius. Like a real-life Disney princess, we are pretty sure those critters performed full song and dance numbers with her while helping pluck all the weeds.
Besides her garden and the Cubs, she was a voracious reader, especially of all things Stephen King, and while we could never understand it, she was Kid Rocks biggest (and maybe only) fan.
She had an amazing knack for finding and appreciating the seemingly unimportant but beautiful moments in life. As if born with some intrinsic knowledge of the universe she was able to see the bigger picture, always able to focus on the little joys in life rather than the daily struggles she faced. Her disposition a constant stream of calm positivity, she was incredibly patient, kind, and accepting to a fault. She truly enjoyed her work at Dan C Trigg Hospital for over 32 years. She could always be found rolling down the halls with a smile on her face no matter what drama she faced that day. She loved everyone she worked with, was always willing to lend an ear, and could be counted on to dispense words of wisdom or more often than not a sarcastic comment to brighten their day.
In lieu of a memorial service, we will be having a celebration of her life at 3:00pm on Friday September 18, 2015, at the Tucumcari Convention Center. Please wear Cubs attire or something purple, anyone wearing black will not be admitted. Bring your stories of Derri to share with all in attendance. Rather than contributing to the mass murder of her little petal-ed friends, we are requesting that donations be made to any of the many Multiple Sclerosis or Cancer charities, or better yet, plant something in memory of her.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Muffley Funeral Home and High Plains Crematory. 575 762-4435 muffleyfuneralhome.com
