1910 - 2014 Obituary Condolences
Earl Flint age 103, life time resident of the San Jon NM area passed away on Friday January 17 2014, following an extended illness.
Earl was born June 4th 1910, at Bard at the time New Mexico Territory to Maratenia and Edna Marrs Flint. He drove the school bus and during that time he met his future wife Edna Thrasher. Earl and Edna married on September 21, 1929, at San Jon NM and with them having one daughter Violet and 2 son, Richard and Clyde. After they married they lived at Bard and in 1934 Earl went to work for the government on the construction of Conchas Dam. He was responsible for training the truck drivers and heavy equipment operators and worked there until 1939. Earl was featured in a documentary of the building of Conchas Dam that aired on the local PBS station. He was drafted during World War II in 1942 and began working for Boeing Aircraft and built the B-29 Bombers until the end of the war in 1945. After the war they moved back to Tucumcari area where Earl worked for Granpa Thrasher in drilling water well all over the area. Earl and Edna moved to San Jon in 1946 where he began working at his true love, being a mechanic. In 1948 he bought the San Jon Auto Parts business and worked there until he retired.
He was active in the community and served as Mayor of San Jon for many years. He was instrumental in lobbing the state to establish a volunteer fire department, ambulance service and the senior citizens center in San Jon.
Surviving Earl are his children - Violet Helker of Perryton, TX, Richard Flint of San Jon NM and Clyde Flint and Fay of Kennewick WA. His sister Maurine Boatman of Amarillo TX, 10 Grandchildren, 19 Great Grandchildren, 15 Great Great Grandchildren and 2 great great great Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Edna, by his parents, by one brother, 5 sisters and 2 great granddaughters, Vicki Westber and Heather Helker.
Services celebrating his life will be Friday morning January 24th 2014, in the First Baptist Church of San Jon, beginning at 10:00AM. Grandchildren will serve as pall bearers. Interment will be in the San Jon Cemetery. The family suggests for those who wish, donations may be made to the San Jon Senior Citizens Center or to the San Jon Community Centery in memory of Earl Flint.
