E.J. Birchfield Services: Have been held. Earven James "E.J." Birchfield died Jan. 29, 2006, in Conroe, Texas. Mr. Birchfield was born Feb. 15, 1931, in Tucumcari. He was a retired veteran of the United States Army, serving in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He was an Airborne Ranger, Jumpmaster and a member of the Elite 82nd Airborne Unit. He received four Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star, a Combat Infantryman's Badge, Vietnam Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal, family members said. Mr. Birchfield was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4709 and a former bullrider with the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. Burial followed at the Houston National Cemetery. Mr. Birchfield is survived by his wife, Shirley Birchfield of Montgomery, Texas; his mother, Gladys Birchfield of Socorro; four daughters, Susan (husband Robert) Haddox of Montgomery, Ronda (Donnie) Hall of Odessa, Texas, Jacque Richardson of California and Vickie (Mike) Miller of Washington; a son, Russell Birchfield of Nephi, Utah; a sister, Louise Darnell of Socorro; a brother, Vernon (Carol Lea) Birchfield of Springfield, Mo.; four grandchildren, Shane Haddox, Chris Haddox (fiancée Rhonda Choate), Cendy (James) Morris and Wendy Morris; a great-grandson, Caleb Haddox and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 570127, Houston 77257-0127. Arrangements were by Metcalf Funeral Directors of Conroe.
