Elvis Dean Batie Services: Have been held. Elvis Dean Batie, 74, of Grants, died at his home on Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2006, following a lengthy illness. He was born on Dec. 7, 1931, in Lamesa, Texas, to William Warren Batie and Ruby Lea Batie. Mr. Batie grew up in Artesia and attended Fort Lewis College, Colorado State University and Eastern New Mexico University. He then entered the family grocery business and was instrumental in developing Batie's Foodway and Batie's Center in Grants. Following that, he farmed and ranched in Durango, Colo., and in Tucumcari. In 1977, Mr.  Batie and his wife, Karen, opened the Baskin Robbins Ice Cream Shop in Grants. Mr. Batie was a member of the Grants Church of Christ. He enjoyed fly fishing, hunting, golf and all sports. He enjoyed coaching little league baseball. Mr. Batie is survived by his wife of 42 years Karen Ekholm Batie of Grants; his children, Lisa and David Armstrong of Odessa, Texas, Andrew and Cynthia Batie and William and Jessica Batie both of Albuquerque, and James VanFleet of Sacramento, Calif.; his grandchildren Whitney Armstrong, Cristopher Armstrong, Kassandra Armstrong, Zachary Batie, Troy Batie, Tyler Batie, Kara Batie and Krista Batie; his brothers Eugene Batie of Odessa, and Don Batie of Chico, Calif.; and his sister Laverne Jones of Grants. He was preceded in death by his parents. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Margaret "Lu" Ramirez scholarship fund, c/o Karen Batie, 1313 Nth 3rd, Grants, NM 87401, or the National Parkinson Foundation. Arrangements were by Direct Services of Albuquerque.
