Helen Alice Louise Parkhurst Hennig, long time resident of Tucumcari, passed away on August 31,2016, in San Marcos, Texas, where she was a resident at Brookdale North, assisted living, since moving from her home in Tucumcari, 3 years ago, to be closer to her daughter. She was 96 years old. Mrs. Hennig was born June 21, 1920, in Blanca, Colorado to John and Rose Parkhurst and was the youngest of 5 sisters and a brother. Helen married Norman W. Hennig in 1953 and moved to Tucumcari.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman Hennig, three sisters, three brothers (two in infancy), and grandson, Robert Bennett. She is survived by her son, Larry Bennett of Kahalui, Maui, HI, and daughter, Karen Laine, of Wimberley, TX. She also left behind, 3 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, a sister, Mildred Ratliff of Goshen, IN, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Hennig attended business college in Colorado Springs after completing high school in Alamosa. Helen moved to California and worked in civil service during World War II where she met and married Wilbur Bennett. She later moved back to Colorado where she worked for Farmer's Home Administration. After meeting Norman Hennig as a pen pal, they married and she transferred with FHA to New Mexico. Helen then worked for Quay County Abstract and Insurance until her retirement.
Mrs. Hennig will always be remembered for her kindness and willingness to be of service to others. She was a member of Church of God, but was active in, and helped support the Center Street United Methodist Church. She loved her family times, reading, listening to music, Senior Citizens functions and volunteering with Tucumcari Hospice.
Life Celebration services will be held for Helen Hennig, on Friday, September 9, 2016,10:00 a.m., at Center Street United Methodist Church with Reverend John Barnett officiating. Burial will follow in the Tucumcari Memorial Park, beside her late husband..
