1923 - 2010 Obituary Condolences
Funeral services for H. L. Parks, 86, of Portales will be at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, April 7, 2010, at the Calvary Baptist Church in Portales with Rev. John Hinze officiating. Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with Phillip Box, Jason Box, Kenny Romero, Brent Byrd, Jim Parks, Marlin Parks, Jonathan Clark and Dyson Clark serving as pallbearers. Bill Smith, Wendell Kelly, Tim Clark, Brooklyn Romero and Reagan Romero along with his Calvary Baptist Church family and his other friends will be honorary pallbearers.
H. L. Parks was born September 17, 1923, in Klondike, TX to Vera and Henry Lee Parks and died April 2, 2010, in Portales, NM. He grew up west of Snyder, TX, and graduated from high school in Fluvana, TX in 1942. Following his graduation, he attended a business college in Abilene, TX for a short time before enlisting in the Army Air Corps to serve until the end of the war. Mr. Parks served in the China, Burma and India Theater as a P-51 pilot in the "Flying Tigers." He was fond of saying that he left going east and came back still going the same direction. He went from Texas to Florida to China to Washington state and back to Texas. Soon after his discharge in January 1946, he moved to the Portales area and made his home in Delphos. In the summer of 1947, a neighbor arranged for him to meet her granddaughter, Betty Sanders, who was visiting from Omaha, NE. Five weeks later, on August 20, 1947, they were married. In 1948, he took the Postal Exam, and began working at the local Post Office as a carrier in 1951. In 1972 he became a Rural Letter Carrier, and continued in that capacity until retiring on November 30, 1989.
H. L. was a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church where he served for many years as a deacon, and taught Sunday School. Besides his activities in the church, he also enjoyed reading, especially westerns and U. S. News and World Report.
He is survived by a son, Larry Don Parks and Pat Branwen of Albuquerque; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Phillip Box of Tucumcari, NM; four grandchildren, Andrea (Tim) Clark, Jason (Marissa) Box, Opal (Kenny) Romero and Sherry (Brent) Byrd; five great-grandchildren, Cole Byrd, Jonathan and Dyson Clark, and Brooklyn and Reagan Romero; and two nephews, Jim and Marlin Parks. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Elliott who died as a child before H. L. was born and Cecil F. Parks in 1975, a son, Ronald Dean Parks who died in 1976 and by his wife, Betty L. Parks, who died March 20, 2010.
