Funeral services for Lois Tivis, 83, of Portales will be at 10:00 AM, Friday, April 3, 2009, in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Wesley McAfee, Rev. Brad Morgan and Rev. Mike Tucker officiating.  Burial will follow in the Floyd Cemetery with Todd Tivis, Chad Tivis, Monty Tivis, Trevor Tivis, Doug Lee, Heath Lee, Alan Lee, Matt McFarling and Ryan McFarling serving as pallbearers.  The family will receive visitors at the mortuary on Thursday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.
Lois Virginia Lott Tivis and her twin brother, Joyce, were born in Hiway, NM, to the home of G. C. (Lum) and Naomi Price Lott on August 9, 1925, and she passed from this life into the arms of her Loving Heavenly Father on March 30, 2009 in Portales, NM.  Joyce passed away from a childhood illness at the age of 18 months.  Lois grew up in the Hiway and Milnesand area.  She met her husband, Lester Tivis, in Portales while he was home on leave from the Army.  She and her family moved to Scipio, OK.  When Lester had another leave, they were married in Scipio on December 26, 1942.  They left immediately after the ceremony for South Carolina where Lester was stationed.
When Lester was sent overseas, she divided  the next 2 1/2 years between her family in Oklahoma and Lester's family in Roosevelt County.  When Lester returned from the service, they moved to Floyd, NM, where they made their home and raised a family.  Lois was very active in the farming and ranching operation.  Lois and Lester moved to Portales in 1977, where she continued to live until her death.
After Lester passed away in 1978, Lois worked in Dr. Ed Miller's office for several years.  Later, she did home care for the elderly.  She participated in the Senior Olympics for a number of years.
Lois was a faithful member of the Floyd Baptist Church, remaining so even after the move to Portales.  She eventually joined Calvary Baptist Church in Portales, and taught Sunday School for many years at both churches.
She suffered her first stroke in March 2000.  Since that time, she had suffered several more strokes and developed other health problems.  Countless hours were spent in therapy as Lois strove to remain independent as long as possible.  Health workers always commented on her positive attitude and determination.
Lois loved jigsaw puzzles, and always had at least one in progress.  She also played solitare on her computer and did word find puzzles for many hours at a time.  She belonged to the Quilting Club at Floyd, and also loved to crochet.  She had made many afghans, both large and small as well as various other projects.
Gospel music was special to her, as she came from a very musical family that played and sang together.  Lois had a lovely voice.  As long as she lived in her home, she had the music "cranked up" playing cd's of gospel hymns.
Lois is survived by three sons and two daughters, Ted and Pat Tivis of Roswell, NM, Jimmy and Kathy Tivis of Floyd, Danny and Peggy Tivis of House, NM, Dottie and Duane Lee of Portales and JoAnn and Owen Kilgore of San Antonio, TX; 15 grandchildren, Todd (Pam) Tivis, Chad Tivis, Debbie Tivis, Leslea Tivis and Michelle Tivis, Monty (Cynthia) Tivis, Robyn (Kelly) Miller, Trevor Tivis, Alan Lee, Doug (Sharon) Lee, Heath (Lisa) Lee, Tammy Martinez, Matt (Tierney) McFarling, Ryan McFarling and Brandi Kilgore; 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Lillie (Roy) Bennett of Lubbock, TX; a brother, Theo Lott of Milwaukee, OR; two sisters-in-law, Bonnie Lott of Alamogordo, NM, and Helen Lott of Roswell, NM; and several nieces and nephews who were very special to her.
