Funeral services for Lurline Owen, 98, a former resident of Portales will be at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Brad Morgan, Rev. Wesley McAfee and Rev. Keith Bryant officiating. Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with Donovan Finley, Travis Owen, Tyler Owen, Wesley Bryant, Chase Gossett and Danny Victor serving as pallbearers. Memorial contributions may be sent to the New Mexico Baptist Children's Home, 2200 S. Ave I, Portales, NM 88130.
Lurline Imogene Owen was born April 29, 1911, in Endee, NM to Nellie (Lay) and Harrison P. Garrett and died May 22, 2009, in Porter, OK. Mrs. Owen grew up in Endee near San Jon. On June 4, 1931, in Tucumcari, she was married to Wayne Owen. After graduating from high school in Endee,  she began teaching school. She later earned a bachelor's degree in education from Highland University. During her career, Mrs. Owen taught in the Endee, Grady, Floyd, San Jon and Kirtland, NM schools. Following her retirement in 1975, she and her husband moved to Mancos, CO. In about 1980 they moved to Roswell to help care for their daughter, Mildred. Following Mildred's death in 1982, she and her husband moved to Portales to live. Since about 2005, Mrs. Owen had made her home with her daughter, Dot. Mrs. Owen was a lifelong member of the Baptist church, and at the time of her death belonged to the First Baptist Church of Kirtland, NM. She took part in the Women's Missionary Union and other church related activities, as well as several professional organizations.
Mrs. Owen is survived by three sons, Bob (Tommie) Owen of Dumas, TX, Bill (Hazel) Owen of Portales and Jim (Jane) Owen of Devol, OK; a daughter, Dorothy "Dot" (Gary) Ray of Porter, OK; 14 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Nell Carson of Borger, TX. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, James, Reginald and Harrison Garrett, Jr., two sisters, Mildred Primer and Dot Garrett, a daughter, Mildred Beason and by her husband, Wayne Owen who died Dec. 20, 1984 after more than 53 years of marriage.
