1916 - 2012 Obituary Condolences
Mary Belle Ayres Mason, age 96, long time Logan, NM, resident, passed away on Sunday, October 14, 2012, in Arkansas City, KS. She had moved from Logan in 2009 to be closer to her daughter, Lannie and son-in-law, Phil Buechner.
Mary Belle was born September 14, 1916, in Seymour, TX. She was the daughter and second out of ten children born to Benjamen Franklin and Myrtle Maye Ayers. Her family moved to New Mexico when she was 5 yrs old. She lived in the Porter Community near Logan during her growing up years and returned to teach at Porter Community School after attending college in Las Vegas, NM. She married Wylie Allen Mason in Silver City, NM, on April 20, 1946. Mary Belle taught school 35 years at Porter, NM, Albuquerque, NM, for 14 years and later at Dulce, NM, on the Jicarilla Apache Reservation after they retired to Chama, NM.
They later returned to Logan and enjoyed many years there with family and friends. She truly loved teaching and said many times that she never had a student who was not able to learn. She was active in the Baptist Church wherever they lived teaching young children in Sunday School and vacation Bible School for many years.
Surviving her are her children, Lannie Buechner and husband, Philip of Arkansas City, KS, James Mason and wife, Marianne of Texarkana, TX. and Mack Smith and wife, Jean of Missoula, MT; step-daughters, JoAnn Myers and husband, Billy of Holbrook, AZ, and Emma Lu Johnson and husband, Alan of Cedarville, CA; step-son, Wylie Mason; along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Betty Terry and husband, Kenneth of Logan, NM, and Crystell Terry of Tucumcari, NM.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wylie Allen Mason in 1997; by her parents, Frank and Myrtle Ayres; by 3 brothers, Edward, Lewis, and Herman Ayres; and by four sisters, Doris, Bertha Mae, Ruby, and Margaret.
Services celebrating her life will be Saturday morning, October 20, 2012, in Logan, NM, at the Logan First Baptist Church beginning at 10:30 AM. Interment will follow in the Logan Cemetery at Logan, NM. Memorial may be made to the First Baptist Church of Logan, NM, in Memory of Mary Bellen Mason.
