Minnie La Veta Shay

1911 - 2010 Obituary Condolences
Minnie La Veta Slusher Shay passed away in Albuquerque, NM at Presbyterian Anna Kaseman Hospice Center, on April 6, 2010, at the age of 98.
She was born on October 20, 1911, in Bison, Garfield County, OK to Frederick Elton Slusher and Delpha Jeanette Steele-Slusher.
La Veta was a pioneer child, born after her father, grandparents, aunts and uncles raced for land in the Oklahoma Cherokee Strip Land Run of 1896. La Veta had many fond memories of growing up in Oklahoma. La Veta graduated from High School in Waukomis, OK at the age of 17 and soon went to Kansas City, MO for her training to become a registered nurse. She started her career as a traveling nurse, going around the country for special assignments. After the family moved to Tucumcari, she worked at Tucumcari General Hospital.
In 1939, La Veta met her future husband, William Earl Shay III in Milwaukee, WI and they were married on August 17, 1940, in Dubuque, IA. They moved to Tucumcari, NM in 1947 and opened Shay's Café on Route 66. In 1956 they purchased the Waffle House Café on Main Street in Tucumcari, and operated it until 1967. They lived and worked in Clovis, NM for a few years. After their retirement, the family returned to Tucumcari where they had left their hearts.
Her love of flowers and gardening followed her throughout her whole life and she had one of the most beautiful gardens in Tucumcari. In it she displayed many of the rocks that the family had found in and around Tucumcari. She also loved to read daily and learned something new every day. She was interested in life and watched the news daily and read our local paper cover to cover.
La Veta and William provided hearth and home for all of the family, with many great times had by all.
La Veta was preceded in death by her parents, Frederick and Nettie Slusher, her husband William Shay, brothers Waldo and Elvin Slusher, and sister Alleta Slusher.
She is survived by her children, William Shay IV (Frances) of Tucumcari, NM, Jacqueline Chappell-Reid (Erle Reid) of Grand Junction, CO, Marc Shay (Linda) of Silver City, NM, and Veronica Wright (Windsor) of Tucumcari, NM, nine grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, and other relatives and friends.
Graveside services were held on Monday, April 12, 2010, at 2:30PM with Episcopal Minister, Gay Wellborn officiating. Honorary pallbearers were La Veta's children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who were in attendance.
The family suggests that memorials may be made to Dr. Dan C. Trigg Memorial Hospital Auxiliary or the Tucumcari Public Library in loving memory of Minnie La Veta Shay.
