Oneta Matilda Thrasher Irving passed away November 29, 2010, at the age of 90, while visiting her husband in the Autumn Blessing Assisted Living Center in Logan, New Mexico. Oneta was born on November 2, 1920, on the Thrasher Homestead north of San Jon, New Mexico, the sixth of nine children born to Richard John and Maud Sheverbush/Thrasher.
She remembered that every sibling had a chore to help out around the farm. Her first chore at the age of three was to hold the tail as the cow was being milked.
Her sister Nellie shared that she and Oneta used to milk 14 cows every morning and separate the milk before they went to school.
Oneta was a homemaker, but also worked in the fields along side her husband,George Clay Irving, in their farming operation, driving the trucks and tractors, moving the irrigation pipe, and hauling hay. Johnny recalls the tractor she was driving caught on fire, and she put it out by dousing it with Dr. Pepper and dirt.
She had been an active member of the San Jon Assembly of God Church for many years, as the pianist, church secretary, Sunday School teacher, and helping with anything else that was needed.
Surviving Oneta is her husband, George Clay Irving of Logan, New Mexico; four children, Katherine Webster and David of Calvin, Oklahoma, Johnny Irving and Cathi of Logan, New Mexico, Gary Irving and Jane of Ingleside, Texas, and Linda Paris and Loren of Sealy, Texas; 13 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren; 3 sisters, Ione Woolman of Farmington, New Mexico, Nellie Brown and Odis of Amarillo, Texas, and Laura Brittan and James of Woodward, Oklahoma; one brothe,r Robert Thrasher and Joyce of San Jon, New Mexico and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Edna Flint; three brothers, John Albert, Leo, and Ray Thrasher, and one grandson, Tracy Cox.
Services celebrating her life will be Friday afternoon, December 3, at 3:00 p.m. at the San Jon Assembly of God Church. Interment following at the family plot in the San Jon Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Jeff Irving, Shawn Paris, Jerry Reed, Dave Bachert, Jimmy Lown, and Pat Yarbrough. All grandchildren and great grandchildren will serve as Honorary pallbearers.
Funeral arrangements are by Dunn's Funeral Home of Tucumcari, New Mexico.
