Rachel Lou (Scoggin) Collins Obituary
Rachel Lou Collins, age 88, passed away at Quail Ridge Assisted Living Facility in Tucumcari, NM on November 17, 2016, after an extended illness.
Rachel, the youngest of three children, was born on June 23, 1928, in Hope, NM to William and Bess Scoggin. In 1940, at the age of 12, her family moved to Portales, NM because of water issues. As a teenager she participated in high school drama and taught GAs and Sunday School at First Baptist Church. Rachel graduated from Portales High School in 1946. While attending Eastern New Mexico College she worked for the home economics teacher, at the college switchboard, and later in the Registrar's Office. While on duty at the switchboard in 1947, the call came through that ENMC was officially accredited as a four-year institution. On November 7, 1949, she married Sidney Prichard Collins at First Baptist Church, Portales, NM.
Except for a short stint working at Fabrific in Tucumcari, NM, Rachel was a stay-at-home mother and homemaker. Her sewing machine ran constantly keeping her boys in shirts and pajamas. She shared her love of the outdoors with her family during camping and fishing expeditions. She made wonderfully tasting meals on a Coleman stove, sometimes while wearing waders and standing in deep water. In addition, she was a perpetual partner in whatever projects that Sid was undertaking.
Surviving Rachel Collins are two sons, Richard Collins and wife Sharon of Roswell, NM, and Anthony Collins and wife Lori of Littleton, CO; four grandchildren, Diedra and Taylor of Littleton, CO, Allison of Plainview, TX, and Patrick of Roswell, NM; as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Rachel was preceded in death by her husband Sidney Collins, her parents Will and Bess Scoggin, her brother Robert Scoggin, and her sister Billie Richards.
Memorial Services celebrating the life of Rachel Collins will be conducted in Dunn Memorial Chapel on Saturday, July 15, 2017, beginning at 10:30 AM with Rev. Steve Kulback, minister of Logan First Baptist Church, officiating. Following her wishes, cremation has taken place.
